<p>The BIRT WebViewer itself is a very good sample because it gives all the functionality that you would like to implement.</p><p>The WebViewer sources can be downloaded on the eclipse homepage or checked out from the eclipse version control system</p>

<p>Do you also want to enable the user of your webportal to design birt reports (the rptdesign files)? The WebViewer can only create the final output (take a existing rptdesign file, ask user about parameters and create the html page, pdf,...) but it can not be used to change or create a rptdesign file.</p><p>So it is an excellent example to see how to interact with the report engine API.</p><p>The design engine API is not beeing used in the webviewer.</p><p> </p><p>You should be able to create a web application to design reports. The eclipse report designer itself is also using the design engine API, so everything that could be done within the designer can also be implemented in your application by using the design engine API.</p><p>Nevertheless it seems to be quite time consuming to implement an application that is as flexible as the birt designer. I do not know any webbased app that is able to create rptdesign files. Actuate themselfs have a webbased designer, although its features are very limited. Perhaps you should start to define which features you want to implement and to see if there are any samples available.</p>
