How is it possible to know what work area a datacapture form is in. does this have to be written in xml??

By "datacapture form" - do you mean the DCT (input fields) or the DCR (saved data that was filled into the input fields)?

The rest of the question is kind of vague with respect to context.

Can you provide a more verbose description of what you are trying to do (and version and platform information)? If so, it will probably be easier to answer the question.
