Passing variable from Parent to Child Workflow

amjoe

Hi all,

Well i'm having trouble in getting the variables that is defined in the parent workflow to the child workflow (its a nested workflow) , Please advice on how to get the variables passed on to the child workflow. I did try the GetVariable but in vain, any suggestions.

Thanks in Advance

I believe there have been other posts on DevNet regarding how to do this (have you searched?)

You might want to look carefully at perldoc TeamSite::WFworkflow and TeamSite::WFtask for related functions - which might help identify for you the piece(s) you're missing in your current implementation.

If you cannot find that information, I suggest you post, as an attachment please, a copy of the workflow templates / external and/or cgi task scripts involved in what you are trying to accomplish.

Use workflow variables set up in the parent to accomplish this. In your child workflow, you can utilize the WFworkflow::GetParentTask method to get a pointer into your parent workflow. From there you can get the value (or set the value) of any parent workflow variable. Here's an example from one of my externaltask scripts:

my ($flag, $jobID, $taskID, $wa, @files) = @ARGV;
my $workflow = new TeamSite::WFworkflow($jobID);
my $parentTask = $workflow->GetParentTask();
my $parentID = $parentTask->GetWorkflowId();
my $parent = TeamSite::WFworkflow->new($parentID);
my $action = $parent->GetVariable($flag);

Related to this.

I have a nested WF, I was having trouble getting the user comment passed to the child.

Added this code (to the child), which works, however if I try to clean the comment (use __TAG rather than __INSERT) nothing shows.

of course special characters break the __INSERT

my $pjDesc = $parent_job->GetDescription();

<workflow name="Concurrent_Approval"
owner="__TAG__('iw_user');"
creator="__TAG__('iw_user');"
description="__INSERT__($pjDesc);">

tips/pointers/RTFMs appreciated

How does __TAG__ clean the comment? What does it do?

Anyway, if you want to use __TAG__ instead of __INSERT__, perhaps you could do something like this in your TAG_info section:

iw_parent_desc => "<input type=hidden value='$pjDesc'>",

Then you could probably do this:

<workflow name="Concurrent_Approval"
owner="__TAG__('iw_user');"
creator="__TAG__('iw_user');"
description="__TAG__('iw_parent_desc');">

Would that accomplish it?

if a user enters in a description like:

this & that

it breaks the WF with invalid XML (due to the &)

__TAG__ replaces the & with the XML equiv (&amp Smiley Wink

Makes my life much easier

BTW, thanks for the code, I will try it.

One thing to keep in mind with hidden TAG_info variables is if the value is empty (contains a zero value or is blank) your workflow UI (where you insert values for your TAG_info variables after running your job) will get stuck and will want a value for the hidden variable. It's maddening the first time it happens because you can't see the hidden variable it wants a value for, so you have no clue why it won't continue on and start your job. You might want to make sure you check the value of your parent's description and if it's blank, default it to something that's not blank.

How about doing __INSERT__(function($pjDesc)) - where function() would take the value passed in and do whatever cleaning you want and then return the revised version of the string.

But fish, why reinvent the wheel ? IW provides __TAG__ to do just that. I wish it worked consistantly.

But TAG operates on form variables - and you're dealing with a perl variable - so unless you do something like what Smitty suggested and stuff the perl variable into a form variable first, I don't see a good alternative.

Perhaps something like [untested]:

sub tag_format{
    use TeamSite::CGI_lite;
    return TeamSite::CGI_lite::escape_form_data($_[0]);
}
