Good day to you all, We use Birt (V3.7.1) through its ReportEngine programmatically from a Java application deployed in OSGi â€“ Karaf container (JBossFuse). As already mentioned by other people on the forum, using the OSGi libs in Karaf fails so we had to build a bundle ourselves from the non-OSGi jars. The way we do this is by packaging all jars under the lib folder of the birt runtime archive in a single bundle. We generate the bundle using the bnd tool. Here is the code that generates a working Birt bundle from the non-osgi libs: //

Once this bundle is generated and deployed in Karaf, we can use the ReportEngine API to generate reports as described in the tutorials. So, using this technique, everything works perfectly fine. Now, the problem we have is that, when applying the exact same procedure with the runtime archive of birt 4.2.1 or 4.3.1 (both versions were tried), the bundle is successfully deployed but all report generations fail in error. To sum it up, all other things being equal, upgrading from Birt 3.7.1 custom OSGi bundle to Birt 4.3.1 custom OSGi bundle fails generating reports. The error seem to come from the fact that the same report information is loaded twice (or more). Would you have an idea of how to solve this? Hi, is there already a solution for this problem? I'm facing the same, in a bit different approach. Since I only need to generate reports within one OSGI bundle, I copied all BIRT jars (the non-OSGI jars) to a lib folder in this bundle, and added them to the class path. For testing, I have included generation of a report in the bundle's start method. When starting the bundle, I receive the same DUPLICATE_STYLE_NAME / DUPLICATE_EXTENSION_NAME messages as Jerome, but not the initial "Duplicate aggregation name" exception. A report is generated, but without meaningful content. A check with the hello_world.rptdesign sample included with BIRT results in the same messages. They are produced when calling openReportDesign. Something with parsing the .rptdesign file seems to go wrong. When starting the bundle as Java application (after adding a main method with the same content as the Activator start method), report generation works perfectly, inside and outside Eclipse. In my case, the behavior is the same for BIRT 3.7.2, 4.3.1 and 4.3.2. It doesn't matter whether the bundle is started in Eclipse Kepler using Equinox, or after deployment to Karaf 2.3.3 using Felix. The Java version is 1.7.0_51. I'd like to avoid some ugly workaround like running BIRT report generation outside the OSGI container, triggered by some OSGI bundle via a system call. So ideas how to solve this would be welcome! Cheers, Jochen

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.51-b03, mixed mode) The "solution" we found to this problem was to add all the libs from the non-OSGi package in the user-lib folder of karaf... de-facto bypassing the OSGi architecture by making birt available to any bundle without having to reference it in any way. That's obviously not the solution we were expecting but it works. We'd still like to have a working OSGi-compliant solution for this one though so the question is still pending.Are the OSGi bundles only targeted at the Equinox OSGi platform? Note that we updated karaf config to use equinox as the OSGi provider instead of Felix but the errors were the same... Have a very nice day, Jer

Additional hint: reports are generated, and list elements are visible, but the chart content is missing.

I've found solution to this problem.
 
I'm packaging whole birt runtime in single jar with Bundle-Classpath
 
On birt startup it outputs many warnings about duplicate extension. Same thing happens when it runs reports. Simple reports work, but complex - not.
 
I've found out that it loads the same plugin.xml multiple times while trying to load all extensions from Bundle-ClassPath. This happens with those jars which don't have plugin.xml inside of it, classloader loads plugin.xml from birt.runtime.jar. There is about 40 jar that don't have plugin.xml. So this is classloading issue. The right way, I think is to take classloader from each bundle and load all needed metadata from it.
 
But I've made quick and dirty solution. plugin.xml from birt.runtime.jar version 4.5.0 contains 79 extensions. I've made a copy of org.eclipse.birt.core.framework.jar.BundleLoader with the same package in the root of bundle. Classloader loads this class instead of one in birt.runtime.jar And I've made a little change in it. It detects if bundle contains 79 extensions and if this is not first jar, then bypass this jar: 
loadExtensions( bundle ); if (bundle.getExtensions() != null && bundle.getExtensions().length == 79 && 
!root.toExternalForm().endsWith(":1/")) { return null; 
}
 
After this change, everything started to work. If you need, I can share whole code. Anyway, this is a quick fix and it should be better solution

bringing this up again: the problem is still there with BIRT 4.5.0. Any idea about a solution?
 
Additional hint: reports are generated, and list elements are visible, but the chart content is missing.
 
Java version is 1.8.0_45.
