How can I get DCT inlines to work for existing DCR

Hi,
I am using an inline call in my DCT to retrieve the user id. This is working fine for new DCRs but does not work for existing DCRs - is there any way to get this working?

We are using TS 5.0.2 (browser templating).

Any help would be greatly appreciated Smiley Happy

Why not use FormAPI? Something like:

Unfortunately 5.0.2 does not support formAPI. Any other ideas??

I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Can you send the DCT and inline?

Here is the section from the DCT calling the inline

Are you getting the text field in the form when you open an existing DCR and just no value, or no field at all? Are you sure the script is running? Maybe at the top add something like:

foreach my $key ( keys( %ENV ))
{
`echo $key equals $ENV{$key} >> some_temp_file`;
}

to see if the script is running and if so, what is in the environment when it runs?

I would set the shebang line of the script to the correct path to iwperl (even though it should not matter).

Also you might want an XML declaration in the output you are generating.

But I think it should work the way it is.

I always thought that inline will be executed ONLY when you open a new DCR, not when you edit a DCR. Somebody correct me if I am wrong !

As James is asking, please clarfy in what way its not working.

I am guessing that you want to automatically enter the current user name in that field. Correct ? In that case (unless I am wrong) you will have to resort to FormAPI (you already have the code for it from John !

I am pretty sure they run every time. Most of my DCTs are defined with inline calls and the fields show up when I open existing DCRs.

I wouldn't be surprised if it differed between versions, and what I am using in 5.5.2SP2a may not work in 2b, etc.

Yes, you will see the fields, but what value do you see ? The one that was entered earlier or re-evaluated from inline at the time of edit?

For example, if the inline is returning system date/time, then does it return a new timestamp each time you open the existing DCR ?

The behaviour I see is that it does not load a new value on edit. I see the timestamp when the DCR was first created. 5.5.2/W2k/SP2b. I have seen the same behaviour in earlier versions.

Thanks, I didn't know about that behaviour. I agree that it does not load a new value on edit - I guess the only way to do that would be FormAPI. But I think most of the time that may be the desired behaviour (use the value in the DCR instead of the inline). I guess if the value in the DCR is blank (such as when you add a field to the DCT) it should not try to use the value in the DCR - what does it do in that case?

The <default> value for a <text> element will never override an existing value, if one exists in a DCR, when you edit an existing DCR. The default value is only used to suggest a value when creating a new DCR.

(Exception: If you add a replicant, then the new replicant will have defaults applied, regardless of whether you are creating or editing a DCR.)

For NEW DCRs the text field is created and the user name is entered into the textfield. However when I edit an EXISTING DCR the text field is created but with no value in it.

So from the discussion it seems that inlines will not work for me, and as I cannot use formAPI as we are running TS5.0.2 has anyone got any ideas I can pick up the user in a template (even if there was some way it could be done through the tpl?).

I think you have to do something that writes to the DCRs. The script could use iwattrib to get the owner/last modified, then write the new DCR XML based on the old DCR XML but substitute that value into the right place.

Yes you are right - when I create a new DCR the field is updated with the correct username. However when I re-edit the DCR (after logging in as a new user) the field is not updated - the value stays as the previous username.
