I do not believe that it has been officially QA'd on Solaris 9, but it might work.
Perhaps someone else out here has already tried to install it in such an environment and can provide information on their results?

Solaris 9 is supported as of OD 5.6 SP1, but not formally verified.
Please see compatibility matrix:

What exactly does this mean? Does it need to be formally verified before we can run it on Solaris 9? What is the formal verification process.
Thanks.

It means you have to wait until it is formally verified before you can get *support* for it on Solaris9. You may or may not be able to get it to work without officiall support - in the past this hasn't been a major problem, but with the significant use of Java and OOTB DBs, there is a greater chance for something *not* to work.
The formal verification process involves getting resources (machines, OS, and people) to run tests and verify that nothing [new] is broken.
So - until that happens, it's basically swim-at-your-own-risk

Formal verification means the platform configuration was part of the formal QA process for the product release. This was not the case for Solaris 9. However, subsequent testing was done to ensure OD runs on Solaris 9. So the configuration is indeed supported, which means if you have a problem and report it to Tech Support, it will be addressed.
Fyi, there is an OD 5.6 doc refresh coming out shortly that will include the recently added platform support, including Solaris 9, several Linux versions and the upcoming Windows 2003.

Sorry about the gaff on support for Solaris 9 - I read the post about Windows2003 that was [incorrectly] embedded within this thread titled for Solaris9 - if I had looked 2 messages earlier I would have seen where you (Todd) already stated that Solaris 9 was supported.
