BIRT 3.7.1 with Windows 7 - JDK version required
rdpeterson

Our IT department just moved us from Windows XP to Windows 7. I had BIRT 3.7.1 installed on my Windows XP machine after installing Java JDK1.6.0_24 on my machine, which I believe later upgraded to version 7 Update 45 (build 1.7.0_45-b18). The V7.5x Designer 371 Report Development Guide Version 5 from IBM/Tivoli indicates Java version 6 is required for BIRT 3.7.1.

Anyway, my new Windows 7 machine from our IT group already had JRE version 7 installed, so I have to install a compatible version of the JDK. I downloaded and installed the JDK, and set the BIRT shortcut path to

c:{Eclipse path on my PC} -vm "{Java.exe full program path}" -vmargs -Xmx512m

I then copied the complete BIRT installation directory directly from my Windows XP machine to my new machine keeping the path the same as before.

When I execute the revised shortcut, it indicates it can't find the virtual machine in the path.

If I just make a shortcut to the Eclipse.exe file and execute it, Eclipse BIRT loads and even loads my last data file(s). However, certain operations no longer work as they did in Windows XP. Also, not all reports that ran successfully in my Windows XP BIRT installation will work in my Windows 7 installation.

Do you have any ideas? I'm completely dead in the water with BIRT. Thanks.

With BIRT 3.7.1 VM settings are in an ini file. In any case I think you are over complicating things. Just download BIRT 3.7.1, use a new directory and try running Eclipse. You should be OK.
