Tuning URI image request timeout in BIRT ReportEngine API
kwoitke

We generate PDF reports using the BIRT ReportEngine API. Often, we find that we need to include images in our reports that are generated by external services. We accomplish this in Eclipse by setting the URI of the image item using Javascript syntax. By binding the image item to a dataset we can drop in information from queries etc... This works well most of the time.

However, occasionally we find that reports are generated without these images that depend on external services being included. These images may take a significant amount of time to generate on the external server and we think that BIRT is occasionally timing out prematurely while fetching these images.

Some of the time, the result image is produced without any problems on the server but does not appear in the document from the BIRT RE API. Additionally, we find that rerunning the reports with missing images always results in those missing images being included. Since we're do some caching of results on the image generating machine, we've concluded that BIRT is occasionally timing out prematurely while fetching these images.

Is there a way to tune how long the BIRT ReportEngine API waits to receive an image from a URI? If this fails how should we proceed in debugging the issue? Can we have an exception thrown if the image is not loaded successfully?
