Jscript runtime error on graphs
hallj05

Hey,

We are using BIRT 4.2.2.

When some of our users move the mouse over any of the graphs on the BIRT reports it gives a "Microsoft Jscript runtime error" that list " 'undefined' is null or not an object". This is only happening on certain computers.

The functionality of the graph is just to change the mouse icon to the hand icon (like it is for clicking hyperlinks), sometimes have some help/hoover text, and to allow the user to drill down to a new BIRT report.

It's not a data issue since it works on some and not others using the same data. They are both using the same IE version (IE 8).

This error is only appearing on BIRT reports, everything else is working correctly on the computers that are getting this issue.

Thanks for any help or info as to what could be causing this.

Have you compared the browsers settings between the working machines and those that are having errors?

How are you implementing to mouse over changes within the chart?

Have you added javascript into the report design/chart for the mouseover effects?

hallj05

The mouse over changes are done using the charts interactivity for mouse over and mouse click. Which the error happens even on BIRT pages which don't have the mouse over and only have the mouse click interactivity.

The browser settings we have not compared, since the ones having the issue are at a client. Any idea what browser settings could cause this error in BIRT?

What Action have you specified for the Mouse Click and Mouse Over events?

As for the browser settings, I would start with the security and javascript settings.

For Mouse Click we are using Hyperlink with the cursor set to Auto.

For Mouse Over we are using Show Tooltip with the cursor set to Auto.

The Hyperlink is using drill through to open the next report, and for the Tooltip we just display an amount from the data set or just plain text.

Thank you for the details.

Comparing the browser settings is definitely the first thing I would do in this situation. I would also verify there isn't a difference in the minor version of IE 8 on the machines that are having the issue.

If no differences can be found between the two, the next step I would take is to use a tool such as Fiddler to capture the browsers traffic when the issue occurs and on a working machine. This should provide insight into what is occurring on the browser when the issue fails as compared to the working browser.
