Actuate BIRT Designer Professional
richie.riviere

Hi,

I've been having a look at some of the examples designed in Actuate BIRT designer Professional. The chart examples in particular are very interactive and have animations etc. I believe the charts use Javascript functions from high charts.

I have a few of questions about the Professional designer.

Am I right in saying that these sorts of animations on charts are not available using the standard open source BIRT designer?

I an running a fairly old version of the BIRT engine (3.7.2). I think I chose this old version because my app server (websphere 6.1) could not support anything better. If I get the Professional version of the designer will the rptdesign files work on my version of the engine?

Is there an excel emitter included in the purchase that would support images, charts etc?

Sometimes using the open source designer you have to manually clean up the xml. I guess that doesn't happen in the Professional version? Is that right?

Thanks for your help. As you can probably tell I'm a newb.

Yes, there is a commercial Excel emitter that not supports charts and images, the charts become live Excel charts. Additionally certain functions and aggregates become Excel formulas.

Open source engines will not be able run any report that uses commecial features. An alternative would be to use BIRT iHub F-Type. More information about that can be found here - <a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='

Right.

thanks for that information Mica.

I've since done some reading about birt ihub ftype and it looks really good. From what I understand it looks to be something that you install on your server rather than just include/integrate into your web application as I have done with the open source version of BIRT.

Is that correct? Is there an option to just embedd it into your web app?

That is correct, but you can easily integrate with your application using JSAPI - <a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='
