Using Chart Interactivity and Report Parameters to filter another chart

Basically, I have a basic pattern I've been trying to implement. I have two charts (e.g. Bar charts) both charts filter on data provided in a report parameter. In addition, using chart interactivity features on chart 1, I want to filter on chart 2. I've followed a recipe found <a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='http://developer.actuate.com/community/forum/index.php?/files/file/577-using-chart-interactivity-to-filter-table-data/'>here</a> which uses one chart to filter a table which is easily adapted to chart 2. Each of these works independently.

Here is the problem: If I filter chart 2 by clicking on chart 1, chart 2 filters as expected. However, as soon as I re-run the report with new report parameters, the filter set by clicking chart 1 is reset. I would like to have the two filtering mechanisms work together rather than resetting.
 
Here is one approach I started but an unable to finish. I can store the filter state as defined by clicking in a client-side (I think it is client side) javascript global variable. However, I don't know of a way to access that global variable prior to the report or chart rendering. As for as I can tell, all the scripting interfaces (e.g., beforeRender) provided in BIRT Designer are server-side scripts.

Have you thought about handling the year with custom JSAPI code as well so you don't have to use the standard parameter pane to run different years?

I'm pretty new at this. I have looked a little at JSAPI, but not sure what you have in mind. Just to give a little more context, (and I certainly welcome alternate approaches), my intent was to incorporate this report into a dashboard and use selector gadgets in the dashboard to set the filter parameters. The reason for this is to try to make it easier for our designers to use the dashboard maker to layout the dashboard without having to worry about underlying javascript. The end result is to have things like checkboxes to select the year while still maintaining the chart interactivity to provide additional filtering. 
 
As I said, I'm pretty new to BIRT so if my approach is completely wrong, I welcome advice.

Gotcha. I'm actually working with a guy you've been talking to already, Kris Clark, to try to find a solution, now.

Here is a modified example that might help get you started. I haven't had too much time to put into perfecting it, so there might be a couple issues (updating the check boxes when clicking on the top chart is one of them). The charts do display correctly though, it seems, with any scenario.

This is a good start. I'm trying to really understand this example so I can expand upon it for our needs. I see the selector box, but how is that connected to the chart?

The JSAPI script is in the onclick event of the html button. You can see this by selecting the button in the design and choosing the script tab under the layout window.

Thanks for the example you provided. However, i have similar requirement but in my case i have to use a date category. What i see is, it only filters on days but not on months even though i group data on months. Any help, tried it on your example and it also filters on only the first days when i used the orderdate.

Can one chart filter two separate charts charts. example additional pie chart with ordertotals and customernumber

If you look at the script in the submit button in the example above, the submit button actually causes both charts to update. the second chart's update is called in a callback function for the first.

Yes both charts update but in this case, chart 2 controls another chart with book mark chart 1 which is a pie chart. This means I've 3 charts now. Chart 1 which you are using country as your categorydata, I'm using date. chart 2 filters to month selected. and I also filter chart 2 also filters chart 3 when clicked but it does not filter based on the month of chart 2 but the whole year data. I want chart one to filter both charts 2 and 3 on the month and chart 2 to filter chart 3 on its categorydata but all in the same month period

This is from your previous chart. I want the pie chart to display only values for the month selected not for the entire period. So if March is selected, and Dragon souvenir is also selected in chart 2, I want pie to display 3516 and not 6127
