Using Amazon Javascript SDK In Report

Hi Everyone,
 
I am very new to Birt just started two weeks ago, I could not find any related topics in the forums so I am posting a new one, please share the reference if the issue has already been discussed,
 
I have some image files stored in Amazon S3 bucket which uses secured URLs, so I can not simply embed them, it says access denied, for that purpose I have to use AWS Javascript SDK whcih allows me to pass the Sceret and Access key and the file I want to access to get a Pre-signed url which I can use anywhere to get that file,
 
so far all good,
so now I want to do this authentication and get the pre-signed url in the report for that I have to include this sdk javascipt aws-sdk-2.1.45.min.js file in report and that where I am stuck,
 
I have tried adding it using report Resources

May be it is because the SDK takes some time to load in the page and the authentication code runs before that,
 
I have also tried using report's clientScript section, here everything works fine but how do I access the object that I get after authentication, in the report so I can put the image secured url (which is in database) and get a public url using this authentication object

What version of BIRT (commercial or OS) and specific version (3.71, 4.4, 4.5, etc...) are you using? What are your requirements for this report?
 
The AWS S3 SDK that you referenced (<a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='https://aws.amazon.com/sdk-for-browser/'>aws-sdk-2.1.45.min.js</a>) is typically deployed as client-side. So depending on your requirements, you will need to use the head.js method to load it in.
 
First, let's figure your requirements... What does this report do? What format is your end user accessing the report? How you will be deploying this? Then, we'll make recommendations on how we can do this in BIRT.

Hi,
 
Right now I am using Birt Designer Pro(Trial Verion) with Birt 4.4,
 
The requirments are very simple just a regular report which shows some employee details and list employee's documents and a link to the document attachment stored in Amazon S3 bucket, documents are using secured URLs so to get the attachment it has to use Secret and Access key and get a public URL, which should be used in the report,
 
I have acheived above using head.js in the clientScripts and then adding a Text element in the report and add a <a> tag and in
<script> Get the attachment URL from object, pass the authentication details and get the public URL using AWS sdk, then update the <a> href with this public URL </script> ,
 
But lets say I want to show Employee's photo which is also in S3 bucket, I can not use Image element and put my script in the Javascript Expression builder becuase it does not recognise anything from AWS skd, I have to use similar approch mentioned about with an <img>
 
and regarding the report format, the end user will be using mostly PDF format and the document attachments links using above technique does not work in exported PDF because when rendering the report for PDF or Excel,
 
And if I try to incluse the AWS SDK in resources report does not run at all, mentioned in the following post

If you are trying to use the <IMG> tag with the AWS S3 SDK, it will not work because the AWS script will not have been loaded when the browser processes the IMG tag. The reason for using head.js is to ensure that the AWS JavaScript is completely loaded. You can use a callback to render your IMG tag, but that won't solve the PDF requirement.
 
As for the PDF output, the use of AWS S3 (JavaScript) SDK is for client side. When the PDF is generated from BIRT, there is no client side JavaScript (via browser) to render those specific items.
 
You can, however, use a Custom Visualization Report Item that would be able to handle the web presentation (HTML output) as well as PDF generation for your image(s). When using the Custom Visualization Report Item (<a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='http://www.actuate.com/download/ihub-311-tsnf.pdf#page=9'>it's a new feature available starting with iHub 3.1</a>), items will be rendered server side with the ability to use client side JavaScript via the integrated PhantomJS. <a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='http://developer.actuate.com/community/forum/index.php?/files/file/1120-ihub-31-custom-visualization-examples/'>These examples</a> will demonstrate that the PDFs will be generated as how they would look from the web (with the client side code).
 
Typically, the Custom Visualization Report Item would be used to generate charts. In your scenario, you could use the Custom Visualization Report Item and render the IMG tag. The image would be rendered in the callback after the AWS JavaScript has been loaded.

And first I am trying to use iHub31 Custom Viz Dynamic Updating D3.js Sample 1__cwong.rptdesign
from the examples you shared for Custom Visualization
 
And it draws the chart

From the stack trace, there appears to be an issue with either locating or launching the helper application, PhantomJS, that allows headless browser printing to PDF from BIRT.
 
Also from the stack trace, it appears that you are using BIRT Designer Pro on a Mac? It's supported, but I would like to find out more information about your environment that would help me troubleshoot the error.
 
1. What Mac OS X version are you running?
2. What Java version are you using?
3. Do PhantomJS files exist under your Designer (/eclipse) subdirectories?
4. I got your BIRT Designer Pro version, buw what is the Build Number of it?

2. Java 8 Update 51 (build 1.8.0_51-b16)
3. com.actuate.phantomjs_1.0.0.v20150710.jar does exist in /eclipse/plugins/
4. Actuate BIRT Designer Professional | Version: 4.4.0 | Build id: v20150710
 
I am able to use the CustomVisualization element at a very basic level and photo is rendering but only in the HTML format for now, I believe if I fixed the PhantomJS problem it will render in the PDF format as well

And yes, resolving the load of PhantomJS will fix the PDF export of the custom visualization.

I was able to replicate the issue. PhantomJS for Mac was not included in the distribution. Here is a fix:
 
<ol><li>Close the Designer, if it's running.</li>
<li>Go to the eclipse / plugins directory.</li>
<li>Delete the com.actuate.phantomjs.win32_1.0.0.v20150710 folder.</li>
<li>Uncompress the attached TAR (com.actuate.phantomjs.macosx_1.0.0.v20150710.tar) into the eclipse / plugins.</li>
<li>Start the Designer.</li>
</ol>Exporting reports with Custom Visualizations will work correctly now.
