<p>In a nutshell, BIRT is an Open Source project that is comprised of two main offerings: the BIRT Designer to create report designs; the BIRT Engine to execute the report designs and produce output. The BIRT Engine is essentially a jar that must be embedded into an existing application server. By comparison, BIRT iHub is a server platform, running on Windows or Linux, that is designed to generate automatically or on-demand a high volume of BIRT report designs. The platform also offers security management, document storage and archiving, advanced APIs for ease of integration, and scalability.</p>
