Generate PPT pages using Actuate V11 SP1
macroe

Hi all,

I'm trying to generate PPT using e.Report via V11 SP1.

I've tested below cases, but all got the pht format not ppt format... Any one could advise?

Case 1:

Submit the generation job via SOAP to generate the report to ROI then using below coding to get the PPT.

ViewParameter vp = new ViewParameter();

vp.setFormat("PPT");

....

gcr = proxy.getContent(c);

result = gcr.getContentRef().getContentData();

Case 2:

On iServer Admin console, click the generated ROI, then Save report using PPT format.

For both, I got the file with pht format, like:

MIME-Version: 1.0

Content-Type: multipart/related;boundary="____Actuate_Content_Boundary___"

Have you opened a case with our Support team (http://www.actuate.com/resources/support/global-support-centers/)
to see if it's specific to 11 SP1, or something has been corrupted in your environment?

I have iServer 11 SP4 Fix 1, and am able generate a valid PPT from both the ROX and ROI in both Active Portal and Management Console in these scenarios:

1. From Active Portal, ran the ROX and viewed the ROI. Clicked on Download in the toolbar. Selected Powerpoint.

2. From Management Console, ran the ROX and viewed the ROI. Clicked on Download in the toolbar. Selected Powerpoint.

3. From Management Console, scheduled the ROX to generate a Powerpoint.

4. From Management Console, scheduled the ROX, generated the ROI. Clicked on the ROI. Clicked on Download in the toolbar. Selected Powerpoint.

Attached are the ROX and ROI, and PPT, but you may not be able to run since you're using an earlier version that I am.

Hi Clement, Thanks for the reply and test. But I'm afraid you generated the same format as mine which the ppt can't open in powerpoint2010.

When you open the ppt you generated by notepad, you can see it's the xml format not binary format as ppt.

The Powerpoint exporter for e.Reports is not as extensive as the one for BIRT. In commercial BIRT, native PPT tables and charts are created.

For e.Reports PPT export, the support for Powerpoint is up to 2007. The actual "PPT" file generated is actually an .MHT file, and renamed as .PPT. Office 2007's Powerpoint can open the renamed "PPT" without any issues. Office 2010 cannot open, and throws an error.

One workaround I tried on a machine that has Office 2010 is to rename the file from .PPT to .MHT, and then open with Powerpoint. At this point, you can Save As into the native PPTX or PPT format.

Thanks Clement, we made the workaround that rename it to .pht for powerpoint 2010, but... we realized that the format is not supported by powerpoint 2013 anymore. It's quite painful finding as our user would upgrade to 2013 early this year.

In this case, for e.Reports PPT export, do we have any alternative? or we have to give up e.Reports for PPT generation?

According to this (http://www.indezine.com/products/powerpoint/learn/interface/file-types-can-open-in-ppt2013.html)
, MHT is still supported in PowerPoint 2013.

I don't have PowerPoint 2013 available to test, but have you tried?

Of the top of my head, one other potential (crazy) workaround is to have a post process after the "PPT" is generated on the iServer. That is to have PowerPoint 2007 (if you have iServer running on Windows) open in the background using vbs so that it can open the MHT, convert and save as a native Excel file (PPTX).

Or if you're really adventurous, we can possibly use the AcVisitor class and GetCustomFormat to do to a true PPT export.
