Images are not supported with the default OS Excel emitter. You can replace the default XLS emiter as outlined @ http://birtworld.blogspot.com.br/2011/07/replacing-default-birt-xls-emitter.html</p>

Images are supported with the Spudsoft Excel emitter, which were included as of BIRT 4.3 (release notes @ http://www.eclipse.org/birt/phoenix/project/notable4.3.php).</p>

Images have been supported in the commercial BIRT Excel emitter for quite some time. The commercial Excel emitter includes native Excel chart export (not static image files), Excel formulas, native Excel Pivot Tables from BIRT crosstabs, and more!
