Dynamic multi-selects?

System

Is it possible to have a dynamic multiselect...i.e. if a top level multiselect has options 1-10 and a user picks 1, 3, 5, then certain multiselects below would ONLY have items 1,3,5 in them? any examples would be appreciated.

i can get it to work when a user only selects 1 option at a time, but not when multiple are selected at one. ive been playing around with arrays but have had no luck.

here is what i have so far:

IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler("/audience_category", "onItemChange", deliveryItems);

function deliveryItems(item) {

var aud_cat = IWDatacapture.getItem("/audience_category");
var aud_cat_options = aud_cat.getOptions();
var aud_cat_SelectionIndex = aud_cat.getValue();

var cat_code = aud_cat_options[aud_cat_SelectionIndex].value;
var label = aud_cat_options[aud_cat_SelectionIndex].text;

var item = IWDatacapture.getItem("/test");
var newOption = new Option(label, cat_code, false, false);
item.addOption(newOption);

IWDatacapture.redraw();

}

For a multiselect, getValue() returns an array of integers representing the indices that were selected. Assuming that audience_category is a multiselect, try something like this:

IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler("/audience_category", "onItemChange", deliveryItems);

function deliveryItems(item) {

var aud_cat = IWDatacapture.getItem("/audience_category");
var aud_cat_options = aud_cat.getOptions();
var aud_cat_selections = aud_cat.getValue();

//For each option that is selected, we want to populate /test
//with that option
var testOptions = new Array();
for (var i = 0; i < aud_cat_selections.length;i++)
{
var cat_code = aud_cat_options[aud_cat_selections].value;
var label = aud_cat_options[aud_cat_selections].text;
testOptions = new Option(label, cat_code, false, false);
}
var item = IWDatacapture.getItem("/test");
item.setOptions(testOptions);

//You may not have to redraw...unless you're on IE5.0.x,
//of course.
IWDatacapture.redraw();

}

I noticed my post did not go through correctly. Essentially, in the loop, the index to aud_cat_options should be the value of the i-th member of aud_cat_selections. So...

aud_cat_options[ aud_cat_selections[ i ] ]

Another correction in my original post, in the loop:

testOptions[ i ] = new Option ...

...of course.

excellent, this works! thank you so much...now if i can add another level of difficulty. the multiselect i need to populate dynamically is nested in a replicant Smiley Sad

this whole replicant addressing issue drives me nuts...how can i use the

var item = IWDatacapture.getItem("/test");
item.setOptions(testOptions);

if the "/test" item is within a replicant and doesnt even exist yet? if i try to hardcode an address, i cant even get it to work then.

var item = IWDatacapture.getItem("/component/0/bodycopy/test");
item.setOptions(testOptions);

Javascript Error: Null is null or not an object

I don't know the datacapture.cfg, but you address an replicant-instance something like this:

var item = IWDatacapture.getItem("/component[0]/test");

Also, you can use a loop to address the instances of your replicant.

for(var i=1;i<26;i++){
IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler("/component["+i+"]/test", "onItemChange", handle_changed);
}

function handle_changed(item) {
.....
.....
item.setOptions(testOptions);
....
....
}

I dont think I was being clear, sorry. I dont need to kick off an event when a user changes a replicant field. I need to update replicant multi-selects (/component[0-100]/empty_audcat) dynamically from a non-replicant field (/audience_category).

I can get it to work if i add a replicant, then hard-code the address in the .js file (not acceptable). i cant figure out how to populate the replicants when they are added, but not give .js errors with 0 replicants.

this line calls my function to update the categories from the non-replicant top level item

IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler("/audience_category", "onItemChange", updateAudCat);

ive included my datacapture.cfg, and .js file. thanks for your help!!!
