You can export the report to multiple sheets using "Output to multiple sheets" option.
 
When exporting the report from the web viewer
<ul type="disc"><li>Select Export Content </li>
<li>Select Excel for the "Export Format".</li>
<li>Check "Output to multiple sheets" -> click ok</li>
<li>The report content will open in Excel with multiple sheets. </li>

but I want to create Excel report in my application, my .rpt design having only grids and I'm using spudsoft emitter
the condition given is
 
if("xls_spudsoft".equalsIgnoreCase(excelRenderOption.getOutputFormat())) {
excelRenderOption.setOption(IRenderOption.EMITTERID, "uk.co.spudsoft.birt.emitters.excel.XlsEmitter");
}
