Highlighting the Top N Bars in a BIRT Bar Chart
mwilliams
This report design demonstrated one way to highlight the top few bars in a BIRT bar chart.

In this example, the Classic Cars database is used. A simple query brings in the Customer Name and their Credit Limit. Sorting is applied in the query to list the data from highest credit limit to lowest credit limit. Next, a computed column, called Rank, is created by doing a running count aggregation to associate each credit limit with a rank. Scripting is then done in the Report:Initialize, the Table Detail Row:OnCreate, and the Chart:OnRender sections using PersistentGlobalVariables to pass the table data to the chart so that it can highlight the bars for the top 3 credit limits. There are other ways to do this, but this is the route that is explained in this example.

This report was designed using BIRT version 2.2.2.
