Mail Server for Sending/Receiving Mails
sunil_j
Hi,
The mail server which we specify in iw.cfg does it have to mandatorily support SMTP? Can there be a mail server which doesn't support SMTP?
My Client is using Novell Groupwise as their mailing server? I am not sure if that supports SMTP or not (I am trying to find out), but I would appreciate is someone can let me know how to configure emails should a Mail server doesn't support SMTP (if its possible to have one)?
Regards

SMTP (simple mail transport protocol - RFC 822) is a well-established protocol for interfacing with a message transfer agent.
If you are on Unix, you can configure Mail::Mailer (the module we happen to use for most of our mail transfer) to use the Unix 'mail' program or 'sendmail' as alternatives to SMTP.
If you are on Windows, you could possibly use something like the executable 'blat' (which we used to ship with our product, don't know if we still do) in place of the Mail::Mailer module as a whole (writing your own interface to calling blat, or some other executable).
From a quick look at the Novell Groupwise web pages - it looks like they have a Novell Groupwise SMTP Gateway for connecting Groupwise to the Internet, and thus you should be able to use the Mail::Mailer code as-is once you've identified the SMTP gateway as your mailserver.
You could try downloading and installing Net::QMTP or Net::LMTP as alternative mechansims, but most mail handling systems (to the best of my knowledge) support SMTP or ESMTP (extended) services so you should be able to use the Mail::Mailer package with little effort, other than possibly having the adaministrator at the site enable the service (if it isn't already - which it probably is)
