CHICAGO CRIME is a sample web application showing how BIRT can be used to interact with location information. The application showcases:
- BIRT’s new custom visualization object, in this case, Google Maps;
- custom icons used depending on the type of crime;
- how markers can display related data in and information balloon when clicked
- use of Google’s Marker Cluster feature, which groups together dense concentrations of markers into a better display with drilldown;
- dashboard data selection for choice of crime type to display;
- how to display a dashboard when opening a BIRT application (see the BIRT project’s index.html file).

CHICAGO CRIME also demonstrates how a BIRT project can be published to any iHub server as its own application. As you will see, all the BIRT content, including the data as a BIRT data object, is included in the project and ready for single-click publishing from within the BIRT Designer.
