How to automate a massive files import into Documentum

Hello Folks,

Please accept my best wishes for this new year 2009. May it gives us health and prosperity and more collaboration.

I have a program .exe which does the massive files import into Documentum. By double-clicking on the exe file, I have to follow the instructions for importing the needed files i.e it works manually.

Could you guide me on the steps to follow to write a procedure or a job in Documentum to automate it. My goal is to have a job which I can schedule in Documentum on a weekly basis.

Never tried this before, but you could try scripting the clicking process by using LoadRunner. Not sure if LoadRunner allows you to configure when the LoadRunner scripts execute.

Just a simple idea, why you don't run your EXE file using Windows's Task Scheduler

Never done this before but...

You can execute an exe from a documentum method set the type to program the verb to the path to the exe.

Create a job to execute the method on a schedule.

Think that should work but like I say never done it always use jars.

Does your program require any user interaction ?

If yes, all of the other responses won't help however, by using some scripting tool like AutoIT (http://www.autoitscript.com/), you could automate the user interaction and then use the Windows Scheduler for that.

I personally use AutoIt a lot, that simplifies a lot of my day to day tasks

To summarize these are the questions you have to answer before we know what to suggest

1) What version Dctm and O/S are you running

2) How is the content delivered - physical media, ftp, ?

3) is the content staged on a filesystem on the content server

4) does the exe require user interaction

5) do you have the source for the exe and know everything it does.

if it is your intent to use the same exe and it requires no user interaction then a job only works for you if the exe will run in the O/S of the server ( I assume Windoze)

As long as the content is visible on the server in any O/S you could easily write a job to call a method as suggested - done it many times, but you have to understand the business rules - i.e. where does the metadata come from - overwrite/version rules, etc. and ditch the exe you use now.

For local options http://www.wincron.com - it is a taskscheduler and a VBA scripting engine in one - easy enough to write and import.

There are alot of advantages to going the job route in that you can leverage the logging and alerting

We're doing a large, unattended, automated migration (import/export) using Blue Fish's Migration Workbench. I highly recommend it.
