Those Damned Elusive Smart Containers

I've scoured the known universe and the information on Smart Containers is still a bit sketchy.

There's a great post here: https://community.emc.com/docs/DOC-2489 that gives a good demo of what can be done - but other than that it's a bit sparse. There's information in the Composer User Guide on how to create a them - which get's you all excited (yes I am sad) and then doesn't really tell you what to do next.

My trustee EMC SE has informed that you should be able to instantiate a new smart container from inside webtop - similar to david's presentation - but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. Can anybody confirm this? I will be building a 6.5 SP1 image soon so will have a look for myself. I also have an inkling that this functionality will be integral in the Case Management Framework announced at Momentum - and this could be why there is not much more detail.

If anybody can shed some further light, provide some real world usage examples, or just generally wants to moan about the lack of documentation around this interesting feature - please join in. Maybe people power will force the information to be released....

Long time no see!

Yes smart containers look interesting, but you cannot instantiate them from within Webtop 6.5 SP1 OOTB - you need a customisation. Did you see the attachments to Davids article as D65-SmartContainerDemo-AcmevillePD-v1.zip looks like it contains sample code to do this?

Thanks for that - I had seen the examples but they looked like they were for 6.5 not 6.5 SP1. I was told that there was possibly some new smart container functionality OOTB coming in SP1 around being able to instantiate them from WebTop et al.

I have some questions for the community:

1) Does anybody know if you can nest Smart Container instances?

2) Does anybody know if they can contain rooms?

3) Can they have permission set templates attached - if so how and when does the alias scope get resolved?

Wish list:

1) Enable some of this declarative functionality for authorised business roles?

2) Placeholders trigger actions once they become materialized?

3) The ability to select which parts of a Smart Container are instantiated prior to instantiation on an instance by instance basis.

Does this still require a customization, even for 6.6? I'm a bit frustrated and confused that this is touted as a feature yet still does not seem to be available from within the user interfaces?
