Fair enough
in a nutshell in EDMS98 and before (10 years ago), Documentum had its own client application, Workspace that was a desktop based app
There was also RightSite that was the web client (not very sexy at the time) but it did the trick
Since 4i, the client got integrated within Windows Explorer meaning that the Documentum repository would appear in Windows explorer like if it was another drive if you will.
In 4i, that when Documentum started implementing WDK clients Web Development Kit) but at the time, pardon my French and apologies to all EMC members of the forum (betting most of them who saw WDK in 4i will agree though) , **** wasn't string enough to describe it
Since version 5, they have been working seriously on the Web client and since 6, they dropped the desktop client to go full blast on Web clients
On the side, there's quite a lot of applications, like full Text indexing for searching within the content of the documents, transformation services to generate PDF renditins of documents (like word, Excel...)
There's too many of them to describe them all in details. I guess, the 1st starting point to see what they are and what they do would be the EMC web site and also, if you have access to the Download Center, you could get the list of products, versions and their release notes so you could see what's been done in each release
Documentum has been around for too long for that, what does it matter the version number in 1996 or in 2003 ?
Latest version is 6.5 SP1 and basically, if you want to start using Documentum, you should go for the latest.
or am I missing something in your question ?
Thanks Francois. But I just wanted to know the version. How documentum evolved? What new features were added in Documentum in order to increase its functonality? I asked the question to gain general knowledge about documentum. But atleast now i know what i shud study now( D6.5) and where to start. Thanks.
Thanks again Francois. I will try to gain access to the versions and the release notes. Now I have a idea how things went and are going . Will research more on it. I got a Content Server Fundamentals 6.0 PDF on web, will start with it.
wud u suggest any more books or pdf's that will help a beginner like me to start exploring documentum??
Depends what you plan to do, use Documentum or develop on top of it (in the second case, you'll need to know about the 1st one anyway, that helps)
If you can, grab any PDF you can get in the Download center and there are also a lot of blogs on Documentum around, look for them
Of course, the best to get started would be to attend a couple of training, that wouldn't hurt either
I did a blog posting on the evolution of Documentum from a development perspective awhile back:
http://johnnygee.wordpress.com/2008/08/30/a-brief-history-in-time-dctm-development/
See ? told you there were some blogs around. On top of that, I don;t want to brown nose but Johnny's blog is certainly one of the best. If only the man was willing to move the the Netherlands....
Well thank you Francois. Are you extending an offer I dont think my wife will let me move to Netherlands, but my company does have a few folks working in Norway, so its not out of the realm of possibility.
maybe....
Anyway, if you're ever in the NL (there are a lot of big Dctm customers so who knows, one day on a project...) give me a shout
Thanx both of the u guys. and your blog is really good. gives a good brief info. will search more in ur blogs
Thanx again.
I'm in the NL next month!! Advise on what to see??
I guess that depends what you like, in which area you will be and how much free time you will have there. Even though the NL is a small country in terms of size, it's quite big in terms of History and stuff to do and see.
In any cases, wherever you are, I recommend you find some Indonesian restaurants. They are all over the place and personally, I find Indonesian cooking brilliant (might sound weird comminf from a French guy but here you go ;-)
