What are general steps in migrating from documentum one version to other...for example from 5.3 to 6

Hey,

does anyone know what are the steps involved in migration from Documentum 5.3 to 6.0?

I even tried to get hold of a guide, EMC Documentum 6.5 sp1 Sytem and Upgrade user guide, searched it online but it could not get it.

anyone has the guide or the steps. can you explain me in brief or detail. also are there any usual/general problems faced during migration?

How complicated is your repository? if you are using LDAP, there is patch you need to apply. For Forms there is another patch.

Workflows makes little bit complicated. Upgrade isstraight forward.

The steps depend on how complex your system is. Generally, you can clone the system to new hardware and walk it through an upgrade in place. For more complicated upgrades involving changes to the underlying hardware platform, database, or repository structure you can use a migration approach and just move data and documents from the old installation to the new installation. I've just finished up some work involving an upgrade from 5.x to 6.x versions of the content server software and some client app customizations.

We have upgraded Dev and Test Env, since we did not have any existing workflows in those env we don't know if there was any impact with workflows. After the upgrade we can start workflows and all. But we are concerned that whats if there was any existing workflow it would work or not and there is no way for us test that out?

Will the existing workflows go into Pause state?

I found the following post, but I don't how could it be realistic?

There is no need to uninstall wf template, however you need to complete all live workflows instances running before upgrading content server

finishing the workflow's before upgrading is specifically mentioned in the server installation guide, including some tips to find if there are still running workflow's.

I guess, if EMC takes time to mention it in the doc, that should make it a quite realistic, don;t you think ?

Will the workflows get paused if we don't finish them before the migration? Is there a way to get around?

If the doc says they MUST be finish, then finish them. If you don;t and if you run into problems, you might not get any support from anybody for not doing stuff which is specifically mentioned.

I don't know if the workflow's will be paused of if the moon will explode and I guess I will NEVER know as I will never try it since it is mentioned not to do it.

Is there a particular reason why the workflows cannot be finished before upgrading?

There isn't any physical rule that says you can't try pausing them, cloning the system, and then try upgrading it and restarting the workflows. (the only thing being the lack of EMC support) It's possible the workflows won't restart, but then again they might. You might just have to do an experiment. How many Documentum versions are you planning on upgrading? You might also want to read the release notes for the version very carefully to see if they impact any of the workflow objects.
