Webtop 5.3 SP6 Upgrade - UCF Issues

We are currently upgrading the DCTM environment from 5.3 SP5 to SP6. The webtop upgrade is giving us few tough moments with UCF errors. It is just the out-of-box 5.3 SP6 webtop. OS - Windows Server 2003 SP2. Moreover, we had done SP5 upgrade earlier for the same environment without much UCF issues.

We are certain that EMC has provided patch(es) for the known UCF issues identified with SP6. I can list the patches that we had applied -

- SP6 Mandatory Hotfix - Webtop_5.3_SP6_HOTFIX_BUG_160906_162775_163015_164797 [downloaded from EMC site]

- Webtop_5[1].3SP6_Bug159568_Hotifx.zip

- SP6 Recommended Hotfix - Hotfix_SR26018370_bug157191.zip [downloaded from EMC site]

Our request to the forum is that if someone has done a successful SP6 upgrade and has applied EMC patches, please list the patches applied.

Or if someone had done successful SP6 upgrade without any EMC patches, please respond.

Hi,

in my last project I had the same issue with UCF. EMC Support gave us a fix for issue 164797, which you also have applied. Have you already tried to remove your local ucf installation, so the new one gets downloaded and installed?

Just remove C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Documentum\ucf and retry.

FYI, I Found out some weird stuff going on with the UCF if you have JRE 6 with an update greater thn 7, JRE 6 Update 7 works fine.

The main issue was that for example, if I check out a document. Close my browser, restart it, go to the folder and try to edit the document, UCF was timing out which was a problem from within Webtop and also with the Application connector. The same situation works fine with Update 7

Thanks all for your response. I am from same team as ashiqabdel, who posted the query. Ours is a Windows 2003, SP2 env.

I would like to add that with the mandatory patch 164797, UCF content transfers are working fine for local configuration. By local, I mean the ucfHome, ucfInstallsHome and user.dir values in /Tomcat/webapps/webtop/wdk/contentxfer/ucf.installer.config.xml are pointing to local user directory.

But, the moment I change these values in ucf.installer.config.xml to point to a shared network location, the content transfers behaves very inconsistent. It works fine when I clear all the jre and browser cache and user ucf folder. But when I log out and login again and do some content transfers, like view or checkout or checkin, it throws com.documentum.web.contentxfer.ucf.UcfSessionManager$ClientException. So every time, I need to clear all the cache and ucf folder for every single content transfer operation.

Also, the network paths are accessible because, it had been working fine with SP5 version, and also works fine with SP6 for 1st time after cache and ucf folder cleaning.

Anybody there who has the user directory set up on a shared network location and having a smooth content transfer experience with SP6?

First to answer the original query, I know of some EMC customers who have successfully deployed the listed hotfixes.

Can you please post the exact error that you get upon applying the UCF hotfixes?

A general issue with UCF hotfix pre-Documentum6.5 is "invalid checksum".

If that's the case, you need to clear the JRE applet cache on the client and make sure that the cache on the proxy server (if you have one) is also cleaned.

There are some timeout issues seen if users click on multple DRLs simultaneously. For this you would need to get a Documentum Webtop hotfix for bug WEBTOP-7502.

Regarding the customer's setup to share the UCF runtime among users, I would like to caution that EMC engg doesnt recommend this setup.
In fact changing ucfHome to any value which is not dependent on $java{user.home} or %USERPROFILE% can create issues.

UCF client runtime installation just takes roughly 4-5 MB (30MB in case JRE included) so it should not be big deal.

BTW, Is the customer in citrix environment? Is the client machine very constarined for storage space?

I am posting the UCF error trace in response to folks who wanted to have a sense of what is boiling at my end

Since I have been facing this issue for over 2 weeks, by now it has become a ritual to clean JRE cache, EMC security certificate, browser cache, user UCF folder and tomcat's work folder (our webtop is hosted on tomcat 6.0.14)

Environment:

App server - tomcat 6.0.14

JRE - 1.5.0_11

webtop 5.3 SP6

Windows Server 2003 SP2 (the app server as well as client machines)

user directory - on a shared network location. This location is accessible to documentum since same network path used to work for SP5. Also, I do not get UCF error consistently. Like 5-6 out of 10 checkout operations or 6-7 out of 10 checkin operations fails. Hence, the network path is accessible, though when you see the error trace, it complains that a path on the shared location is not accessible.

There is a similar issue with our environment. Multiple checkouts works. But if I do multiple checkin then it fails with a time out error, even though I select just 2 documents. These documents are virtual documents and the size of the assembled doc does not exceed 120 KB each. Is the 7502 hotfix an answer to this issue as well?

Coincidentally I know this issue very well.

This is bug 159568 (DC-92).

In the list of applied hotfixes I see this one already mentioned.

So I guess either it is missed while applying the hotfixes or some incorrect order of applying the hotfixes has caused the fix to be overwritten by some older jar.

Anyways, I would just suggest you to re-apply the hotfix - "SP6 Recommended Hotfix - Hotfix_SR26018370_bug157191.zip".

I think your issue will definitely go off.

And also I would suggest that you delete the JRE applet cache after HF installation and break this ritual by not doing it again ever unless some older version of webtop is accessed or you install newer hotfix. Just FYI, with 6.5 release the JRE cache has to be never deleted.

Regarding the shared drive for UCF client installation, I would again suggest you to avoid this to get performance benefit and also stay away with some possible issues I can see with this.

If for some reasons it is very necessary, then make the "client.engine.timeout" option value to 1 (minute).
