DMCL folder in system32

Good morning,

I understand that DMCL directory is used for caching of documents, however, in the past I always thought the directory was a subfolder of your install directory. I am running out of space on my Content Server, and I noticed since June 1 files have been going to C:\Windows\system32\dmcl. It is a lot of files also. Does anyone know why that would be? It is using space quickly. Thank you.

We don't have this folder in our c:\windows\system32 directory on the server ?

What version of the content server do you have ?

Has anything changed on your server since the creation date of this directory ?

Did you install/deploy new stuff on it (like Docbasic methods or an application written in Docbasic or using old technology) ?

I have in front of me a rather clean 6.5SP1 server and there's absolutely no dmcl folder on it (just did a search on the whole drive)

I have seen in the past some weird behaviour on the CS, rebooted it and it was back to its old self.

You could try to stop all Dctm services, delete the content of this dmcl directory and reboot

Don't forget that the content server uses some environment variables and even though it's not documented anywhere (or maybe it is, can't remember), windows is kind of limited in the amount of memory reserved for the environment variables so it could be that actually, Windows, somehow 'lost' some your env varibales.

Also, don't forget, it's WINDOZ. Whatever they say, a good old reboot every so often can't hurt your server.

Thank you, the creation date is from 2008, but no files showed up there until June 1. Very odd. Also I see 6 instaces of mthdsvr.exe running. Do you know if that is normal? I did also start migrating data from one store to a new store this month. Not sure if data is being cached because of that.

c:\windows\system32\dmcl, the dmcl-directory is created in the directory where you started idql(32)/iapi(32), it contain object cache.

you can delete.

The number of mthdsvr.exe processes, is control by your server.ini.

mthdsvr.exe, docbasic method servers.

A DMCL folder acts as a place to cache things for the dmcl40.dll. Normally it is created in the Documentum user directory (standard path: C:\Documentum\DMCL). If it can not identify the Documentum user directory, it assumes the current directory is it and creates the DMCL directory there.

In your case a process that uses the dmcl40.dll (could be iapi32.exe, idql32.exe, dmbasic.exe, samson.exe or something else) with a current directory set to C:\Windows\system32 was started and created the DMCL directory.

You can delete the directory (unless it is blocked by the process that created it). I would assume that it will be recreated a soon as the process is started again. You should identify the offending process and change the working directory of that process to a better location. I would use a tool from www.sysinternals.com for that purpose.
