Do you use historical photos for marketing?

Does anyone have experience dealing with historical images that pertain to your company? How do you store and tag them on Documentum? Do you store them right along with current photos or separate them out as historical? Did your company take all the photos so you own them outright? If not, do you have photos that are so old you just don't know who took them? If this is the case, are you still "allowed" to use them since they are used for historical reference only?

The reason for my questions is that we have many, wonderful photos that we can not prove that our old AV department took. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that we do not store them on Documentum and share them with the company. Basically that renders them useless.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this.............

Is this recommendation from your Legal dept? If so, then they obviously dont want you to get in a situation where you publish the pics without the owner's permission. The real question (to your legal dept) is whether you can use them (from a non-publishing) perspective (eg internal news letter or intranet site). If you cant, I do see your point that if you dont include them - whats the point.

You are correct. Our Legal department is recommending not putting them on Documentum because we can't "control" who uses the photos. However, I'm really surprised there isn't some sort of statute of limitations or something when it comes to such old photos. How can someone prove they took that particular photo? We have old photos of our buildings, products, etc. (no people). There has to be come risk that the marketing area is willing to take (which we do in some instances) but I really wanted to know if other companies have faced this same issue and, if so, what they do.
