Installing OpenDeploy

Why do you need to be "root" to install OpenDeploy on a UNIX machine?

To install it I beleive you do. In addition, OD often is configured as setuid (to run as root), this allows OD to change the ownership of all of the objects deployed as needed.
The setuid install is very common, but if you have trouble getting root to install OD, setuid is going to raise a huge stink.
BTW, the Content distribution forum is a better one for this question. OD is one of the main topics there.

Although you have to install OpenDeploy as root, you can run it as a non-root user. OpenDeploy 5.6 includes a CLT called iwodnonroot for setting this up.
BTW, there's a content distribution forum on devnet for questions and discussions about OpenDeploy.
