Webtop 5.3 sp5 Performance Issue

We have been getting a lot of performance issues while browsing folders using webtop 53 sp5.

our content server is also 53 sp5 hosted on HP-UX

webtop is hosted on tomcat.

We are using deep folder structure under a cabinet to be browsed by users. It takes awefully long time to pull the data.

Any ideas to improve the performance here.

noticed that too and it seems to happen mostly if you're an admin/super user, regular users don;t seem to have this kind of problems

Content server bypasses ACL checks for Super user which turns into faster retreival of folders and documents listing as compare to the regular users where content server checks for applied ACLs for each folder and document.

For troubleshooting perfomance issues run a statspack report on database side. This will give you the queries that are taking the most time and you can then tune these queries. Your DBA may help you getting the database tuned to get the optimum results.

Itt seems to me that is in conflict with the previous poster's observed experience. He suggests that Super Users/admins have slower response, while you suggest that there are ACL checks that are bypassed for super users which should result in faster performance for super users - who should we believe? In our environment (I work with Vishal, the originator of the thread), we have sporadic reports of regular users experiencing slow response. Would the number of groups (and through group membership, number of ACLs) you are part of contribute to slow performance? We have gotten reports back from the DBA team occasionally indicating that some "heavy" queries were getting run occasionally, but none of them appeared to be involved with retrieval of folder lists. Do you have any specifics on what patterns of queries that browsing a folder structure through Webtop can/should generate? Perhaps we could run those against the database directly periodically and see if we notice any pattern of slowness with them. In general, we are usually at a loss as to how to narrow down a given poor/slow performance report to tomcat, network, or database, especially when we cannot reproduce the behavior on demand; even if we could, there are still so many things to watch, we don't really know what the right ones to watch really are.

Hi Larry:

As mentioned before Content Server uses different algorithm for evaluating permissions set for super users as compare to regular users . Details of this are mentioned in Admin Guide Chapter 10 - Sutopic is How ACL entries are evaluated on page 374. I have seen faster response using superuser at some of my customers as compare to the regular users. It may NOT exactly apply to your environment and the test you are performing. I am not sure how the user previous post was testing and how the environment is configured. There could be many issues including JVM of tomcat, DB paramenters etc. Enable tracing while running the Folder actions and run the same queries against database to get accurate results as you mentioned. Could there be any jobs that is bringing performance down for certain time frame. Or may be load of user at peaktime bringing JVM down. Garbage collection settings for JVM could also be issue. dm_updateStats amd DB's AWK or statspack report will give you a better idea about query issues and optimizing it.
