Importing Documents

I am looking into building a non interactive Java bytecode app that can be used to import individual documents into Documentum on demand from a batch environment.

The only example that I see in the SDK is the UcfTransfer applet. I'm looking for some additional examples in Java and/or .Net.

UCF is built for transfer content through web app. If you are building a regular java app, look at the IDfImportOperations class thats part of DFC. The DFC javadocs has some simple examples.

DFS provides some examples which you can find in the SDK. Actually, there are both .NET and JAVA samples.

The question is if you really want to have all the overhead of a DFS installation if you all you want is a small batch importer? I would write an API skript (or if i feel sophisticated a dmbasic skript). Since that is no longer supported Jonny's answer is the next best thing.

However there are use cases were you would use DFS for the task. If you have to create something that can be called from outside as a webservice that would be the way to go.

What use depends on the use case, your infrastructure (if you already use DFS there is little overhead) and your skill set. Are you familiar with Java or .NET, DFC or DFS or maybe with API and Docbasic . Is it just an importer or does it have some more business logic in it? Which is the SDK you are talking about? (WDK, DFS, DFC, etc.)

Thank you all for your responses. I have a couple of sample apps running using DFC now. I do have one follow up question about using DFC vs. DFS for this application.

The business user initially requested a DFS solution. Their primary reason is that they thought that a DFS process would be more portable to a remote server.

Is a DFS Java bytecode solution possible? Is is advisable?

I'm pretty sure you dont have to use UCF for content transfer; its just more efficient, since UCF does compression and error handling. Look in the DFS Development Guide for more details.

DFS comes along with Content Server installation. DFS SDK provides enough samples about how to import document. For ContentTransferMode, you can use MTOM/BASE64/UCF. You don't have to use UCF.
