Using DFC 5.2.5 or 5.3

Hello,

I am trying to integrate Documentaum 5.2.5 into our java based application. At the moment, we are not yet ready to upgrade to 6.5.

My question, can my application use DFC classes to connect a remote Documentaum server? So far, the answer seems is "no" to me and that my java class, DFC jar and the Documentaum server has to be in the same machine. Am I correct?

I dont quite understand your question. DFC jar is required to connect to content server. If you are building a client-server app, then dfc.jar needs to be installed on the client machine. If you building a mult-tier app (eg web app), then dfc.jar should be installed on the app server. The communication between the client (through browser) and web app does not require dfc.jar to be installed on the client machine, since the app server is handling all direct Documentum calls.

My prototype is to build a web based application but the application server for the web app is hosted in different than the machine than the documentum server.

according to your suggestion, I can deploy the dfc.jar file in my webapp war file at my app server (ex. tomcat) in machine 1, it should be able to connect the documentum server in machine 2 by using DFC classes?

Is this the right way to create a connection and a session to the Documentum Server from the client?

docbaseName - identifies the Docbase with which you want to establish a session. Specify the name of the Docbase in one of the following formats:

Docbase
Docbase.documentum_server_name
Docbase@host_name
Docbase.documentum_server_name@host_name

where

Docbase is the name or ID of the Docbase
Docbase_server_name is the name of the server that you want to use
host_name is the name of the machine on which the Docbase resides

Yes, your approach is correct.

You could still use the latest DFC version as it's backward compatible. That way, when you'll be ready to upgrade your server, you won' have to go through recompiling and testing

thanks for the comment. however, only 5.2.5 and 5.3 of DFC are available to download from the powerlink.emc.com site with our log in. It may not be available to us because our account does not have the license for 6.0.

Johnny, Can I still use this approach if my internal Document repository is using "Records Manager Internal Document Server " instead of "DocBase Document Server" as the respository. what should the " docbaseName" parameter look like?
