How to ask DTS for a PDF rendition synchronously

Hello,

we have build an aplication that needs to transform Word documents to PDF.
We have implemented a SBO which queues the requests to the CTS and check every 2 seconds if the rendition has been processed.

The problem is that it spends almost 30 seconds to get the rendition!!!

We would like to know how to do synchronous requests to CTS. We have read that the SDK provided with CTS does not work in a "real" synchronous way:

So it seems that the only option is to use DFS Web Services to do this. Has anybody tested the synchronous rendition in version 6.x?? Could we expect a better performance by using these Web Services instead of our SBO? Or the solution is as simple as changing the DTS configuration parameters to speed up the check of the queue item?

Anyone has any idea about this problem???

However I have not tried, I have a feeling that the Tranformation service (CTS WebService) and it's transformJob operation which is told as working synchronously is also using a "poll" mechanism to determine whether the rendition is complete or not, only it's not returning while it's not complete.

I assume you could lower the polling interval on the DTS server against the queue items, that should help.

If your SBO is working nice, then you can "convert it" to a DFS service in "minutes", that can be an option too if the transformJob operation is not performing well...

Look at ECS_65_reference.pdf for the Transformation service.

Anyway, I would like to hear some real experience on the Transformation service's operation...

I tried the Transformation service's transformJob operation from the samples in the emc-transformation-sdk, but I wasn't able to get a rendition synchronously. I got the same error as vittalreddy in a powerlink's forum thread

first of all thanks for your response.

The Documentum official reference guides say explicity that the Transformation Web Services works synchronously and that it requests the renditions directly to the CTS, without adding queue items in the transformation queue. Anyway, I am not sure that it would improve the performance of transformations in a significative way... I have opened a case in Documentum asking for that... I will post the progresses

could it be something related with the Transformation package installation? Maybe one step missing?

These Web Services doesn't belong to Documentum core WS. Is there a reference guide that explains step by step how to install that?

I haven't seen any specific documentation on how to install the transformation.ear. So I did it as it is written in the DFS deployment guide, and simply put the transformation.ear into the JBoss's deploy folder and it worked fine. As it is a DFS service, it should take care what repository name you pass in the request, but maybe you're right and we have to configure it somewhere else.

I got it!

I've should read the ADTS_6.5_administration.pdf... It's not written down clearly, but it's obvious if one think a little: you shuld install the CTS WebServices on the same host as the DTS(ADTS) server is. So the synchronous request really is done in a synchronous way as the invocation of the service makes the CTS calls on the same machine. There is a CTS WebServices configurator which you have to run after the installation of this package, this "registers" the docbase, which I was missing (in transformation.properties which references an other preferences.xml). So don't deploy transformation.ear into Java Method Server, instead run the whole installer on the (A)DTS machine. Of course this need more resources on the (A)DTS server, but you can do sync requests... If you need only async requests, then transformation.ear is enough, but some say that we shouldn't deploy any other application in the Java Method Server because it's not supported.

It's a pity that this wasn't written down nowhere.

what you explain is really interesting, but I don't see that installing the CTS WebServices on the same host as the DTS means that the requests are synchronous... I am sure that this is going to improve the performance of transformation, but the difference between sync and async requests is that the first one avoids to queue requests in the CTS queue, isn't it?

Anyway, have you tried to transform a document? Does it improves the performance vs. the async requests in a significative way??
