UCF vs http content transfer

Hello,

we are analyzing the differences between UCF and HTTP content transfer modes to upload documents in a WDK based web application.

Could someone recommend us wich one of these modalities should we use? Has someone real experience in working with one or both of these??

The answer is - as always - it depends.

My findings in the same matter (though I'm using DFS but not WDK):

UPLOAD:

It depends primarily on the content size.

If the file is available as a file in the OS, then you have three options, BASE64, MTOM and UCF.

BASE64 is not recommended over size of 5k.

Content in SOAP attachemnt (BASE64 and MTOM) tend to eat up heap space on server, so over a few MBs I'd suggest UCF.

Between the two limits, MTOM is the winner.

DOWNLOAD:

If ACS is running you get URL anyway, so transfer mode does not really matter.

you're right. For small content or simple content transfer, MTOM/BASE64 is enough.

UCF is desined for distributed content transfer and provides some advanced features. UCF is better to work with ACS/BOCS. For more info, pls refer to DFS dev guide.
