I am using Documentum 6.0 SP1. the users are complaining about the workflow. whenever a user forwards or finishes a workitem (task) they are prompted to confirm. is this an option that can be turned off? if so what do i need to modify.

And what client do you use?
Could you possibly have turned on 'Performer's sign-off required when finished' on the manual activity they are completing?
Have a look with the Activity Inspector on the Performer tab.
