updatetask

nipper

Arrghhhhh!

Trying to do a get latest in a WF

This command works great from solaris:

iwupdate /default/main/config/STAGING /default/main/config/WORKAREA/tsadmn

but this part of my WF does not update (the tasks on either side go, so I am certain it is executing.

<updatetask lock = "f" name = "Update" owner = "tsadm" start = "f" delete = "t" overwritemod = "f">
<areavpath v = "/default/main/config/WORKAREA/tsadm"/>
<successorset description = "Go to DeployIt">
<succ v = "DeployIt"/>
</successorset>
<srcareavpath v = "/default/main/config/STAGING"/>
<activation>
<or>
<pred v = "SubmitIt"/>
</or>
</activation>
</updatetask>

I'm confused, tired, annoyed, & about to go home & kick the dog.

ANybody spot anything ? Just go to external task & iwupdate ? That is my thinking.......

TIA

Andy

What are the steps you are going through before, or as, you are running this workflow that you use to verify whether the updatetask workfs?

I cannot say I've used one in a while, but if you can describe the full scenario, I might be able to see if I can reproduce it... (or has this already been called into Support?)

I use an updatetask that is virtually identical to yours, with 2 minor differences:

o I have overwritemod set to "t"
o The <or> tags in your <activation> are unnecessary (this is just a nit on my part)

Mine works like a champ.

Basically I have a workflow, that when a file gets copied into a WA, the WF is kicked off,

WF does external task to submit, update to get latest from other WAs (we have manditory write locks) then external task to deploy.

THe WF is initiated with iwjobc and iwinvokejob, so it is strict XML.

TS 552 and no support yet (though I will log one today).

re: Smitty, I took out the <or> & tried the other flag too, basically almost copied the WF in the manual. No luck.

I assume your "tsadm" user is a master and is a member of the group the workarea is shared with? For whatever it's worth, I set the owner of the updatetask to be a master user. Don't have a clue if it makes any difference at all.

What is really strange is that the job flies off without a problem.

No errors in iwjoberrors.log.

Since I am invoking this puppy form the jobc, it must be strict XML so I am not certain how to grab any errors. I just know that there are changes in Staging that do not get to the WA

where is that **** dog, I need something to kick..... :-)

Yes, tsadm is a Master. I did notice only a Master, I will add
that to the other roles, but I tried it as myself & still the same. Neither is the owner of the WA but both have write access.

Did you check the iwtrace.log as well - there have been times (I think mostly on Windows) where information got logged to iwtrace.log and not iwjoberrors.log.

I'm still not sure I understand what you're doing here.

You're in workarea "A" - you submit some files to staging - you then do [effectively] a Get Latest in workarea "A"? or are you trying to do the Get Latest in some other workarea - to pick up the files you just submitted from workarea "A" ?

Is it possible for you to post (as an attachment) the job description file, so we can look at the complete code?

Workarea A is for automated info to be dropped in. Workarea B, C & D users add content. When they add content, a getlatest will be done on A.

To make it easy, I thought I would try a single WF, external task, update, external task. That is not working. The upate just doe not update.

Here is the wft

Thanks

Call me crazy, but I think I agree with Adam on this one. It really looks like you're submitting from the same workarea you are trying to update. That would mean there would be nothing to update after the submit. What does submitit.ipl do?

OK you are crazy. :-)

submitit.ipl does a submit, I use that instead of a submittask.

This WF is not the final one, I am just trying to get update task to work.

I change bar.c in WA 2 & submit direct. I change foo.c in WA 1 and run this WF.

End result is that both should be changed in STAGING (which they are) and both should be changed in WA (only foo is)

This WA stays unattended, so no one will be able to do a get latest. I am trying to keep it up to date.

OK, I think I'm getting it now after looking at your job spec and looking at the docs. You have no files attached to your job, correct? The updatetask will only perform an update on the files attached to the job. No files = No update.

I'm guessing you'll probably tell me that there are files attached to the job and my revelation will be crushed...

Hmmm, I think we have a winner. I just want it to do a get latest & update the WA.

This job is being kicked off with a iwjobc and iwinvokejob so I do not have any files attached.

I guess then I will change updatetask to external task & do a get latest.

I'll have to reread the docs. Thanks a lot Fish & Smitty

Thinking about this a bit more - I now understand why you are getting the results you see. The process looks something like this:

Submit modified file bar.txt in /default/main/branch/WORKAREA/wa1
Run workflow containing <updatetask> with:
- <areavpath v="/default/main/branch/WORKAREA/wa2"/>
- <srcareavpath v="/default/main/branch/STAGING"/>
The <updatetask> will only attempt to update files associated with that workflow, since bar.txt is not directly associated with the workflow, it is not updated in wa2

Your choices are:

Perform a check of modified files (iwlistmod /default/main/branch/WORKAREA/wa1) and explicitly add those files to the workflow before running the <updatetask>, or
Modify your existing <externaltask> script (or create another) to run the CLT iwupdate directly - using the vpath to the root of the workarea, rather than to explicit files in the workarea

i.e., it's the difference between running:
iwupdate /default/main/branch/STAGING/foo.txt /default/main/branch/STAGING/baz.txt /default/main/branch/WORKAREA/wa2
and:
iwupdate /default/main/branch/STAGING /default/main/branch/WORKAREA/wa2

The first (updatetask) explicitly lists all the files associated with the task to update from the staging area, the second (externaltask) requests to pull updates from the entire staging area.

Hope that clears up the what / why questions regarding this scenario.
