Maximum number of workflow transitions?

Does anyone know if there is a magic number for the maximum number of transitions a workflow can make? We have a situation whereby a workflow waits for an hour via a dummy task and then runs an external task to poll a directory for some files. It seems that if this workflow is left for over a week (polling each hour - each poll & wait = 2 transitions) the workflow can mysteriously disappear from the system!! has anyone experienced similar behaviour? is anyone aware of any maximum limit to the number of transitions a workflow can make?

There is a KB article 49669. Which states that around 1,000 task transitions.
