Custom Menu Item--Email

Hello Everyone,
I have a question regarding using the send_mail.ipl from the CMI (custom menu item). Here is how I am calling the ipl:

$cmd ='D:/iw-home/iw-perl/bin/iwperl

/iw-home/bin/iwsend_mail.ipl -t $user_name; -f InterwovenDeployAdmin -b "d:/iw-home/custom/email/messages/submitmessage.txt" -s "Deployment Failure"';

$results = `$cmd 2>&1`;

Unfortunately, it does not work. This works within the workflow, but I seem to be missing something when I try to invoke this from the CMI.
Any suggestions?

I believe iwsend_mail.ipl expects you to pass in a jobid, taskid and areavpath as it is written to be executed from a workflow externaltask. You may have to modify this script to make it work as a custom menu script.

Yes, take out the parts of the script that refer to jobid, taskid and areavpath. Anything executing methods from the WFtask.pm and WFworkflow.pm modules needs to be removed. If you don't know how to do this, you probably should write your own email script.

What if I pass it "dummy" params to the script?

That won't work since the WFtask.pm and WFworkflow.pm calls will fail because they expect valid Job ID and Task ID.

As Smitty indicated - iwsend_mail.ipl is designed for use within workflows - period.

If you want a custom mail command to send email - you'll (a) probably want to write a CGI script to prompt for information, and (b) write the mail interaction yourself using something like Mail::Mailer [which iwsend_mail.ipl uses] or Mail: Smiley Frustrated

endmail [another alternative, that some prefer], or any one of a number of other such Perl modules or other utilities that exist out there in the world.

Perhaps if you explain in more detail what you are actually trying to accomplish we could provide more directed responses....

FYI, I am trying to create a deployment center where they can do most of their work from one interface including deployments, kick off workflows, Get status of Server. But right now I am concentrating on the deployment aspects. I currently have all the pieces in place for the deployment except the email. Hopefully gzevin provided will help in this task. I appreciate the assistance.

If you're trying to send email as the result of a deployment - you might consider using a DNR script to run after the job has completed. I believe there is some mention of examples of this in the manual and some code in the IWODHOME/solutions/perl/ directory ...

Ghoti,
The problem is that this task is not associated with a workflow and the DNR would not have reference to which user (I am not sure about this) was calling it. Which is why I was running into problems with the iwsendmail.ipl. If there is a better way, please advise. But from what I am able to gather, I cannot use the iw_sendmail.ipl because I don't have the wf params and also the dnr would not work because It would not know which user was calling the it.

Okay - the custom menu item kicks off the deployment, waits for it to finish and then sends email using a script such as what gzevin indicated.

If you want details of the deployment captured in that script - you will want to parse either the in-memory XML logs via a DNR *or* parse the new (5.6) manifest log files.

I'm not sure if the modules supplied for parsing the in-memory logs have been updated with routines for parsing the manifest log files (different DTDs) - but, if you're so inclined, it shouldn't be too dificult to build your own parse for these files using modules like XML: Smiley Tongue

arser or TeamSite::XMLnode and use that code within your custom menu CGI to (a) display it in the window and/or (b) include it within email sent to the user who initiated the deployment.
