Templating Permissions

hi friends

we just installed 5.5.2 on a new box and we are doing some testing. (solaris)

I just found a couple of strange permissions 'idiosyncracies' and was wondering if you had any insight:

1. tpl files cannot read another previously generated file to include in a template when generating.
2. iwmaster cannot edit anoter users file even when both the generated page and the dcr are unlocked .
3. tpl cannot write files other than the filename entered into the generate prompt. (workflow cannot write a text file either.)
4. templating cannot do mkdir.

can anyone help? this weird behavior happens even when permissions are 777. i am inclinde to think this is a server config issue but have no idea where to begin. i would appreciate any instight you folks might have to share. THANKS!
