iwgetwfobj does'n work in workflow?!?!?!

meikel

Hi,

i need to check my workflows from within a workflow (don't ask :-()
So i wrote an external task ipl.

the script contains the line
my $xml = qx($iwhome/bin/iwgetwfobj);

when i start it from shell it works well. but when the WF starts the script it fails.
$xml is empty and the script exits.

We have win2k and teamsite 5.5.2

Any solutions?
regards
meikel

There is a known bug (#40432), found in TS5.5.2 SP2 (but probably present in earlier versions, including TS5.5.2), wherein iwgetwfobj doesn't work within an iw-perl script when called via backticks as an external task on Windows. I'm guessing that qx() uses the same mechanisms as backticks.

The workaround is to redirect the CLT's output to a file and then to read the file, e.g.:

`iwgetwfobj > c:\\this-is-my-output.xml`;
open( XML, "c:\\this-is-my-output.xml" ) || do something;
my $xml = join( "", <XML> );
close XML;

I'm not sure that my join() above is the best way to read in an entire file. I think I saw somewhere that said that you should *not* do that. Can some Perl expert out there can confirm or deny my theory?

Performance-wise - try this:

my $xml = '';
if (open(XML, "c:/this-is-my-output.xml")){
    local $/;
    $xml = <XML>;
    close(XML);
}
else {
    # error-handling
}
# process $xml as desired

You might be able to use a pipe...

my $xml = '';
if (open(PIPE, "iwgetwfobj jobid |")){
    local $/;
    $xml = <PIPE>;
    close(PIPE);
}
else {
    die "[pipe] ($!)";
}
...process $xml...
