New tab in 6.0 UI pointing to a JSP

I'm trying to simply create a new tab in my CCP UI using a JSP. I decided to start with what's already there rather than add anything new to the mix just yet - mainly so I can get my bearing straight on the sequence of events that leads to a new tab showing up properly on the UI. I picked the Show Current User tab that shows up if I follow the instructions to add the "customer_samples" stuff into the UI by modifying the toolkits.xml file to add in the customer_samples stuff. That ends up adding 3 new tabs successfully to my CCP UI. What I decided to do is take the customer_samples stuff back out and add only the ShowCurrentUser tab into the "customer" path. Here's what I did:

1) I created a /com/corp/custom path in my /interwoven/iw-home/local/config/lib/content_center/customer_src/src path and copied the CurrentUserServlet.java and the strings.properties files into that directory from the equivalent path in customer_samples_src. I did not modify these files.

1A) I forgot to mention this part: I copied /interwoven/iw-home/local/config/lib/content_center/customer_samples_src/web/customer_samples/current_user.jsp to /interwoven/iw-home/local/config/lib/content_center/customer_src/web/customer/current_user.jsp. I did not modify this file.

2)I modified my /interwoven/iw-home/local/config/lib/content_center/customer/WEB-INF/conf/customer/ui_custom.xml to be this:

5) I then ran sudo ./install_webapps.ipl -i -f

Everything seemed to execute properly, but when I log into CCP, it doesn't create the new tab properly - I've attached a screen shot of the page. Any ideas what I'm missing?

Bizarre behavior. When I run /interwoven/iw-home/local/config/lib/content_center/customer_src/make.sh it overwrites my /interwoven/iw-home/local/config/lib/content_center/customer/WEB-INF/conf/customer/ui_custom.xml with the original empty version:

It completely ripped out the addition I made for adding my custom tab. Why does that happen?

OK, I made a small modification to the JSP file (current_user.jsp) where there was a hardcoded path pointing to the customer_samples area - I changed it to point to the customer area, and I also changed my sequence of events after seeing what running make does to my ui_custom.xml file. And I was able to get the tab to display the right stuff inside the body of the page, but the name of the tab still doesn't resolve to "Current User" like it is set up to in the strings.properties file. I've attached the new screen shot. What's the magic in getting the thing to map the label in the iw_custom.xml file to the mapping in the strings.properties file?

Hi Dave,

You should work in the customer_src directory then run make. The customer directory is just the compiled output of all the files in customer_src directory.

Dave,

You only need to use string.properties if you are trying to create localizable code. If you only care about English then you can put the tab title in the label attribute.

If you do want it to be localizable, then you should put the resourceBungle attribute in, and point it to your strings. See samples for how this is done in the tabs.

This is not clear at all in the documentation. In chapter 2, under Customer Toolkit, both the Directory Structure section and the Configuration Files section imply that the customer path is where you modify the configuration files and the customer_src path is where any Java code is modified. If nothing in the customer path is supposed to be modifed by the developers, this should be made clearer in the documentation.
