Redirecting the user incase TS server is down

Is there any way I can setup a redirect for my TeamSite server so that when the server goes down, the users get automatically redirect to an apology page, instead of the normally page not found error.

What I mean is, a redirect for http://xxxxx/iw to an apology page say http://xxxxxx.html

couple of questions:
1. Which web server are you using?
2. If your server goes down, then you won't be able to run even the redirect page from it as obviously the server itself is down. Is this what you meant or did I get it wrong?
3. If you are bringing down the server for maintenance purposes, then can you not first set a dns redirect before the maintenance window starts?

Fo running maintenance on the server, is there any way of finding out who is in TeamSite at any one time before taking it down?

The only thing really available to see who is on the server is iwrecentusers.
Have a look at the docs to see how to use it.

Displays a list of everyone who has used TeamSite since the last time the TeamSite server was started, and a timestamp of each user’s most recent TeamSite operation.

In our environment (Windows 2k, TS 5.5.2 [no TS service packs] ) if a user signs in and has their home page set to "to do" and doesn't access "files" they will not show up in the iwrecentusers list. In order for someone to appear in the iwrecentusers list they must leave the "to do" list.

I'll keep that in mind in the future. You would think that might be mentioned in the docs!

We are using IBM HTTP server as web server.

What I am asking is, anyway to setup a redirect in TS inbuild webserver (apache) to redirect the user to an apology page when the server is down unexpectedly. We dont want our user seeing 'page not found' error. Instead we want to provide some customized error page.

If it is a planned maintanance, then no issue. we can inform the users. But how to manage when TS goes down all of a sudden and people access it in the mean time the administer notice the outage.

So you mean the iwserver. If iwserver goes down it should on its own show a page with message like "TeamSite server is down ...please contact your TeamSite administrator....."

Is it not working this way for you?

Yes, that works. but can we give a customer message instead of this default message? We want to give a custom message with a look and feel matching with our other web applications.

I think that message comes from a Perl script, I don't know if it runs at the time the error is detected or if it runs when you install to set the error somewhere, but if you search IWHOME for a file containing that message you might be able to determine the code to change. Just guessing here...

At an educated guess I would say the file you are after is

IW-HOME\httpd\iw\noserver.html

ITs says
"Unable to connect to the Interwoven TeamSite Server. Please contact your system administrator"

When I stop TeamSite server and try to access TS through browser, I am getting "Cannot find page" error. Not getting message like "TeamSite server is down ...please contact your TeamSite administrator....."

I tried with replacing iw-home/https/iw/noserver.html file (which has this content) with my customized file, but same name. That too is not working.

When you stop teamsite you also stop the webserver which is part of TeamSite. Therefore I would never expect it to work when you have run the stop command.

Do you have some type of automatic load balancing/failover device at your company? If so call TeamSite through that device which would know that TS web server was not listening and have another webserver listening on another box just to serve your apology page.
