move dcr and html
Leigh
One of our editors wish to move a dcr and associated html to another directory within the same branch. Copy To Area option only copies files to another branch. What is the best way to copy a dcr and html file without losing the associated link between the two files?
Thanks, Leigh

There is no direct way of doing that.
By using out of the box funtionality you would....
Run File/Copy for each file and type the required destination.
You would also need to go to the command line and update the extended attributes for the generated file, so that it points to the new location of the DCR.
If this is something that happens regularly, you might want to consider creating a custom solution that wraps up those functions.

If you only have a few to do....
Edit the DCR and do a "save as" to put it in a different folder/name.
Then "Generate" a new HTML document.
You probably should also delete the originals.
That would do what you want. But if you have a bunch of them to do, a perl script would probably be a better solution.

If you are doing this a lot, I have a rudamentary perl script that will do this attribute copy on a win2k box.

Hi Adam,
Thanks for your reply but we are using Teamsite on Sun boxes. Do you have a perl script for Sun boxes?
Much appreciated.

If you really expect to manage TeamSite, you had better be able to convert a PERL script from DOS to Unix.
90% will be the same anyway

I will forward on to you this evening, when I have access to the W2K server. Most of it should be OS-neutral. I have tried to use modules where possible to let perl do the right thing on the right OS.
If you have problems converting dos2unix, just let me know, and I will assist.

Some of this has already been covered in this thread, but ...
1) If you move/rename the DCR you should either:
(a) delete the old generated files and re-generate them, or
(b) move/rename the generated files and then "fix" the EA's associated with them to reference the now-renamed DCR.
2) After you move/rename these files - you want to make sure that you:
(a) delete all the original-named DCRs and generated files
(b) submit the deletions
(c) most likely you will also need to deploy the deletions using a filelist deployment.
We're in the process of putting finishing touches to such a custom "AdminMove" menu item right now where I'm working - but it contains the use of a lot of custom modules and was designed around the CMS architecture for this customer - so it's not really generically useful outside its context.

Thanks everyone for your help but .....
The reason why we do not wish to delete the old html files and regenerate new ones is that we wish to keep the metadata that has been assigned to these files.
Thanks,
Leigh

if you move the files within Inelligent FS (backing store), the extended attributes will be retained. Do not delete html files, just regenerate them.

I've been assuming that the names of the generated files are derived from the names of the DCRs. If that's not the case, then you are correct, you don't need to delete the genreated files, just fix the EAs on them because the old EAs will point to the old DCR name - and you want to avoid that.
However, you would still want to make sure of the deletion and submission of the old DCR (probably don't have to worry about deployment unless you actually deploy your DCRs)
