where is the link bet MetaTagger and Search?

hi, w.r.t. the concept of using MT to tag contents and then be able to subsequently search contents, are we looking at an integrated solution ready-to-use all within the IWOV platform?

Assuming the contents are metatagged (in the Extended Attributes), how does one proceed from here? Do I need a search engine (Autonomy?), what comes out of MT that goes into it?....how do the pieces fit together???

enlightenment needed here... thank you very much!

One needs to deploy/publish the Metadata (Extended attributes) using Data Deploy to a search repository/index and then configure the search engine (e.g autonomy, verity) to do a Metadata Search.

I hope thats helps.

what and how does one generate the input to the search engine? what does the file contains? and what will search engine returns?

if there is no metatagger, doesn't the search engine indexes the content as well?....juz wanting to understand more...

thanks!

Instead of deploying the EA's to the Search Engine's database you can also include the EA's in your HTML page in <meta> tags. Most search engines can be configured to index only these tags, and you can search for specific ones as well.
In the result set most search engines can be configured to display the summary (description meta tag) and the title, that can both be generated by Metatagger. I have tried this with iPhrase and Verity.

pardon me...but how do you get the EAs into HTML using metatagger? what the pros and cons of the 2 methods, (i.e. output the EAs as XML for search engine and directly embedding the EAs into HTML)?

guess that if my docs are ms-word or pdf, the former would be more appropriate?

thanks.

How to get the EA's in your HTML:
First of all this is not Metatagger functionality. MT just creates the EA's and it is up to Teamsite (Templating) to make sure that the <meta> tags are inserted into your page. (you can hava a couple of lines of code within your Presentation Template) This of course only applies when your HTML page is a result of one or more DCR's.
If you have Metatagger tag existing HTML files then you need to have a piece of code that, as part of a workflow, inserts a couple of extra lines in your existing HTML code before submitting & deploying it.

You are right that the above does not really apply to other document formats such as doc, pdf, etc.

Pro's & Con's:
Obviously the pro of inserting <meta> tags within your HTML page is that it is very easy to implement and gives some quick advantages.
The con of this is that the benefits are very limited (compared to feeding a database) and it only applies to HTML content.

Inserting the EA's (+ a link to the document) into a database is very powerfull if your goal is to personalize information (match content-profile with user-profile), setup a Portal where the different portlets are filled based on a query (For instance in the Press Release Portlet: show information where "category" = "press relesease") or if you want to be able to use more advanced features in a search engine such as guided navigation, alternative documents, categorized search results etcetera.

Inserting the EA's in a database requires some more work, definitely if you don't use the standard database schema of the search engine. I know that we have experience with some of the well know search engines such as Verity (K2/Ultraseek), iPhrase, and others. Personally I have also done something similar for SAP Portal's TREX search engine.

I hope this helps you a little bit more.
