Mac OSX or OS10 and samba

ttriemst

I have a question about using Macs with TeamSite. One of our departments recently got Macs (running OSX) and they started using them without a problem. They don't run TeamSite GUI, but they are connecting to TeamSite using Samba. The only problem that I am having is that when they copy files or folders from Mac to TeamSite, it copies over temp files (ending with .DS_Store). It also copies over some other type of Mac file, by placing a ._ in front of the file (if I was moving file sample.html, it would copy sample.html to TeamSite, as well as ._sample.html. I have looked at the autoprivate.cfg file and am not that familiar with regular expressions. Had anyone had to deal with this at all? The following is my autoprivate.cfg file:

((
[Format of an auto-private match item is...
((name-to-match-against)(num-prefix-chars)(num-suffix-chars)
(((another-suffix))
((yet-another-suffix))
)
)
]
((~WRD1234.tmp)(3)(4)) [MS Word temp files]
((~$x.doc)(2)(4) [MS other temp files]
(((.txt)) [more suffixes to go with ~$ prefix...]
((.html))
((.htm))
((.htx))
((.dot))
((.mcw))
((.wps))
((.rtf))
)
)
((#x#)(1)(1)) [emacs]
((x~)(0)(1)) [emacs]
((_vti_cnf)(8)(0)) [FrontPage]
((.rsrc)(5)(0)) [Mac IPT uShare]
((.volrsrc)(8)(0)) [Mac IPT uShare]
((.HSresource)(3)(8) [Mac Xinet]
(((ancillary))
)
)
((%x)(1)(0)) [AppleDouble format]
((x.original)(0)(9)) [TeamSite Merge file]
)
( [Format of exact auto-private match item is...
((exact-name-to-match-against))
]
((bin))
((tools))
)
)

For the .DS_Store file it should be relatively easy:

((x.DS_Store)(0)(9)) [MacOSX Directory UI files]

However you might be able to take care of all of them with a single regex assuming you don't want any files that begin with '.' to be considered "public" within TeamSite:

((.x)(1)(0)) [files beginning with '.']

I haven't tried either of these settings myself, but I think they'd work.

Remember that you have to run iwreset after making changes to the autoprivate.cfg file before they'll take effect - and - that it will not cause existing files that match those regexs to become marked private - only newly created files after that point in time that match those regexs will be affected.

FYI - the . files (all of them) show up whenever copying files from MacOS-X to Windows (and possibly to Unix to) through Samba. My guess is there might be a samba configuration that could be tweaked to prevent this, but I don't know what it is.

Also FYI: It makes no difference if you're using Jaguar (10.2) or Panther (10.3) versions of MacOS-X.

Hmm - a little bit of investigation appears to yield results - you might want to edit the /etc/smb.conf file on your Mac and in the [global] section add
hide dot files = yes

The next time you map to a machine from the Mac, it looks like it prevents any files beginning with '.' to get transferred (or at least to show up).

Hope that helps (and thanks for asking, because that was annoying me ;-)
