DBI install/upgrade

gsheebu

Hi,

Is there some document which outlines step by step how DBI and DBD can be installed/upgraded on Teamsite. I'm really finding this very tough. I could do it on Activestate but not on Teamsite. Please help.

Which version of DBI/DBD are you trying to compile ? Is it for Oracle or any other database. Windows or Solaris ?

Installing DBI/DBD-Oracle on Windows can get tricky -- atleast it has been for me.
You will basically will have to comiple the modules. (If there is a binary distribution, somebody please let me know) There should be readme/instructions on how to do that along with the distribution - I assume you are getting it from CPAN. You will need either Microsoft Visual Studio (nmake, etc) or one of the UNIX emulators. Here is they way I compile/install it using Visual Studio:
(after, untar, unzip..)

iwperl Makefile.PL
nmake
nmake test
nmake install

I have not been able to compile the newer DBI/DBD versions with iwperl. I have been using DBI 1.1.4, DBD: Smiley Surprised

racle 1.0.6.

If you have specific problems compiling, provide more details.

Hope that helps.

Hi... Here are some more details...

I'm using DBI 1.28 and DBD-Oracle 1.14 to connect to Oracle database. Platform is Win2k server. The nmake utility is also there with me. It is giving the actual problem.
It asks for some Windows specific header files like afxwin.h.

Perl.c
d:\iw-home\iw-perl\lib\MSWin32-x86\CORE\BRTEST.H(5) : fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afxwin.h': No such file or directory
NMAKE : fatal error U1077: 'cl.exe' : return code '0x2'
Stop.

When these files are provided it says these MFC classes require .cpp extension for compilation.

Perl.c

\iw-home\iw-perl\lib\MSWin32-x86\CORE\AFX.H(15) : fatal error C1189: #error : MFC requires C++ compilation (use a .cpp suffix)
NMAKE : fatal error U1077: 'cl.exe' : return code '0x2'
Stop.

So i'm stuck at this point of compilation. I installed VC7 and .NET components and copied all the lib files into iw-perl..../CORE. I also copied MFC/lib files into this CORE dir.

Please provide more insight into this problem. Hopefully i have provided sufficient details.

Hi,

What i did before was actually to update the version of perl installed on the server.

So if you are running on a windows environment install the activestate and updated it. If is an environment runinx in unix then most likelly already as perl on in, so go and just update it.

Personally i wouldnt update the iwperl version.

As I mentioned earlier, I have never been able to compile the new versions of DBI/DBD: Smiley Surprised

racle with iwperl which is v. 5.005_03.
I would recommend first try compiling older versions: DBI 1.1.4, DBD: Smiley Surprised

racle 1.0.6. You can later try to upgrade the DBI/DBD version.

Also, there is no need to copy the libs and includes to your iw-perl directory. I don't do that simply because you need those files only during compile, and there might be MFC interdependencies that I do not understand. All you have to do is to append the path(s) to your INCLUDE and LIB environment variables.

From the error message it seems like the path to afxwin.h is not in your INCLUDE environment variable. Just add it and try again.

I would not recommend upgrading Perl (iwperl) version itself without carefully analyzing its implications.

Hope that helps.

Thanx a lot the installation of DBI & DBD was successful... but one last part of it is left. I wrote a script to access data from Oracle and it works fine from the command line. But is does not work when invoked from the template. What happens is it does not find some dlls which are present in the Oracle_home/bin folder e.g OCI.dll. I have set the ORACLE_HOME variable and also included the bin folder in the PATH variable. Tried iwreset too but still the script is not working.

Please tell me what should I do to get the ORACLE_HOME\bin path to iwperl?

Did you set those environment variables within the script / PT ? I believe you must because the script / PT is not run with the user's environment information. Another alternative (it's been a while since I've had to deal with this, so I could be mucking it here) is to modify the httpd.conf.template for iwwebd to pass through environment variables like this - that might work, but I'm not sure.

HI,

I tried setting the environment variables also. Hopefully this is the right way:

$ENV{ORACLE_HOME} ="E"\\Oracle\\Ora81";
$ENV{PATH} = "E"\\Oracle\\Ora81\bin".$ENV{PATH};

This works fine when i try iwpt_compile, but the actual PT through teamsite given an error when invoked.

There are either some syntactic problems introduced by your posting, or you managed to write the code wrong.

$ENV{ORACLE_HOME} = "E:\\Oracle\\Ora81";
$ENV{PATH} = "E:\\Oracle\\Ora81\\bin;" . $ENV{PATH}

An alternative for the latter is:

$ENV{PATH} .= ";E:\\Oracle\\Ora81\\bin";

Thanx for your immediate and earnest response... but i'm still having the same problem. What you wrote works perfectly fine when I run:
iwpt_compile.ipl -pt ****.tpl iw_pt-dcr xyz

and with the same dcr through teamsite give "Cannot process template".. Just fail understand where things are going wrong... I'm connecting to Oracle 9i... Cud that be causing a problem... but it did work thru the command promt...

When in doubt - fall back on tried-and-true methods of debugging.
1) Remove lines of code until it starts working, then start putting them back in until you can isolate the line that's causing problems.

2) set up code within the PT to log output to a file and add a lot of debugging print statements.

Hi,

Followed your advice and put debugs all over the code. The problem lies in the following line:
my $dbh = DBI->connect("dbi Smiley Surprised

racle:contdb", "system", "manager");

which gives the following error:
Connection Failure(12560): ORA-12560: TNS Smiley Tongue

rotocol adapter error (DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach)

Now I guess some other environment variables may have to be set. I read in some of the mails that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH may be useful, but dont know what exactly to set it to. Any other ideas will be helpful too.

If the script works from the command line, but not within the context you are using it - look at the environment variables that exist when you run it from the command line - that's how you can get the value to set within the script.

Hi,
This is really frustrating... there is really nothing in the environment of my command promt which is required to be set. Yet the code from my template doe not work. Why it is unable to resolve the service name is simply beyond my imagination now.

I'm just at a complete dead end. I'll take 'any' ideas at this moment.

You're saying that at your command prompt (this is Windows right?) if you type:

echo %LD_LIBRARY_PATH%

You don't see anything?

gsheebu

Hi,
No, the LD_LIBRARY_PATH is not set. Should it be set? If so, to what? The planform is Win2K server. I dont see any other variables of significance in the environ of the command prompt from where it works.
