All,

I am trying to read the content of a DCR into a string so that I can then use TeamSite DCRparser on the XML nodes to extract the values. Problem is, when I try to slurp the DCR into a string all that I takes in is the XML declaration:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

This is the code I am using
my $dcr = "y:\\internet\\main\\branch1\\WORKAREA\\content\\templatedata\\intranet\\deptInfo\\data\\demo-112103";
open(DCR, $dcr) || or die ****...
my $xml = <DCR>;
local $/=undef;
close DCR;

print "XML: $xml\n";

But all that is printed is the XML declaration. This leads me to conclude it can open the file, buit what gives?

Any help would be great :-)

local $/;
$xml = <DCR>;
close(DCR);
}else{
# report error or abort abort?
}

This works for me.

Still only gets the declaration. It CAN find the file. It just seems to be having a problem reading the contents in.

This is really weird, I am trying it on our enterprise system and everything is fine.

Your line "my $xml = <DCR>;" only reads one line of input. That's how Perl I/O works, and how it is documented to work.

Doesn't look like you're using TeamSite: Smiley Very Happy

CRparser correctly. Most PERL modules that parse XML handle the I/O part for you and return the root node. All you need to do is pass the xml document to the parser object:
....
my $root = $parser->parsefile($xml);
...

If this isn't the case with DCRparser (hard to believe it's not) then read the content of the XML filehandle into an array:
...
my @lines = <DCR>;
...

I had the same problem a while ago.... I suggest you read each line at a time and append that to a variable.
Something like this...

while(<DCR>)
{
$variable .= $_;
}

Thanks for the input, this has definitely gotten me further. But it won't find values for all the nodes, just one of them. Is there another format I should be using?

here is how it runs:

Got ID 1055714707008714902928 and User ra1428

(which are the correct values from the DCR)

#close(IN); #=# Moved up higher.

Always try to close the filehandle as soon as you're done with it - unless you have some specific reason for not doing so.

Btw, the only change you needed to make to your original code to get it to read in the whole file, instead of just the first line, was to reverse these two lines:

my $xml = <DCR>;
local $/=undef;

Un-defining the input record separator doesn't do you any good if you do it after you read in the input.
