TeamPortal iwmergemanifest core file filling disk

Hello,

We’re using TeamPortal 1.1 for Websphere on Solaris 8.

Our /var mount became 100% full. Then we noticed that the following file was taking up over 1GB of disk space:

/var/core/core.iwmergemanifest.26653.egvgdcesl01.0.0.1069669330

This file was too big to vi, but a “tail” on it returned XML-formatted data, which seemed similar to the data within the manifest file that is created by iwportalnightly.ipl. We ended up having to move this file out of that directory, which freed up 25% of that mount’s space.

I have two questions:
1) What is the purpose of this file?
2) Can I safely archive/delete it from time-to-time?

Generally speaking a core file is a memory dump from a program that went belly-up for some reason. These files are also generally in binary format (with a bunch of string data inside) - you might be able to get some information about it by running:
strings -a core.iwmerge...
However, the name of the file itself would seem to indicate something about what program died.

I'd suggest contacting Interwoven Support, and arrange to upload the core file to them (they should provide you with the information on how to do this, and what else to provide for them to be able to try and diagnose the source of the problem).

Once you upload the file to Support - feel free to remove it - its only use is for debugging the problem; it is not needed by the system to run.

I just wanted to circle back and post what IW support told me:

This file is a dump file and is created when one of you task / executable fails.

2) Can I safely archive/delete it from time-to-time?

Yes you can delete the file to free the space on your system. If you think that this is happening frequently and needs analysis then you need to archive it.

I have since removed the offending core files to free up the space on the /var mount, and will continue to monitor the program that caused the core dump.
