is there any way i can get the workarea name in an independent ipl file? I'm running this file on the click of a link provided in the user task.

I was just about to ask the same question.

If this is a CGI link then you would be able to access the workarea location through the task API.... read up on the workflow PERL API....

if this is a link which is independent to the workflow, say for example a link from an email message then you would need to pass the workarea location as a parameter to the script through which ever means that you are generating the email...

eg the link would be htpp://...../somescript.ipl?workarea=/default......./
