Failed opening temp file

OD 5.6 sp1 latest 2 patches...WIN2k servers

When running a simulate deployment I get the following error

LIB: 2003-12-15 11:35:09 ERROR: Failed opening temp file(D:\INTERW~2\OPENDE~1etc\.AL_Test44.al_documents.wuwasq02.diff_file).
LIB: 2003-12-15 11:35:09 ERROR: DoCopying() failed, check target log.
LIB: 2003-12-15 11:35:09 ERROR: Failed deploying local_directory[0] (D:\temp) to (d:\temp)
LIB: 2003-12-15 11:35:09 ERROR: Failed 1 of 1 local_directories

But when I run it strait it works fine

On your target server do you have the d:/temp dir in the allowed directory portion of the odrcvr.xml file. on my servers the path is d:\Interwoven\OpenDeployNG\tmp.

Yes it works fine regular deployment
but fails on simulate

What's wierd is that it is asking to write to a file in the

\INTERW~2\OPENDE~1\etc directory

When I try and do a

\>echo test >

\INTERW~2\OPENDE~1\etc\.AL_Test44.al_documents.wuwasq02.diff_f
ile

I get a "The system cannot find the path specified."

but when I try this

\>echo test >

\INTERW~1\OPENDE~1\etc\.AL_Test44.al_documents.wuwasq02.diff_f
ile

It writes the file fine. Do you see the difference in the short file name of

\Interwoven

Where/who does OD tell where to write the diff file. It looks like it is trying to write it to the wrong place.

Heres a dir from the root and there are no conflicts

\>dir /x

Ah - the wonders of DOS short-naming code. I've never seen it affect OpenDeploy like this, but it used to cause me tons of problems with CGI scripts on Windows where I created the binary wrapper (copy of show_env.cgi) for the perl scripts (.ipl) in the iw-home/httpd/iw-bin/ directory.

Go to

\ and type:
dir /x | find "INTERW"

Basically, if you have two (or more) directory entries that contain identical characters up to a certain amount (8?) - Windows will shorten it - and put the ~1, ~2, etc after it. Occasionally (perhaps on reboot, or due to modification of one or the other directory entry?) it decides to change the mapping so that what was ~1 now becomes ~2 and vice-versa.

In your case, OpenDeploy stored the "short name" as it was originally generated - presumably there were two directory entries starting with

\INTERW at the time that OD was installed, and now there's only one (or there are two and they swapped).

A while ago, I had disabled the 8dot3naming setting in my registry and then ran into problems installing (or uninstalling) OD - and at the time I was told that disabling the 8dot3naming setting was not supported. Don't know if that's still the case.

You could probably search through the registry and all the files in IWODHOME to see if you can find / fix the errant entry.

Sounds good so far...

Well there is also a directory, that a consultant created before I started
work here, called

\Interwoven_ipl
Yea with me now...

When I do a dir /x on the base server

\>dir /x
Volume in drive D is Applications
Volume Serial Number is 509C-F490

Got me so far....

Well all pointers and directory locations in the registry and services
panel point to this short name setting "D:\Interw~2\OpenDe~1\
This leads me to believe that OpenDeploy was installed after the directory

\Interwoven_ipl was created giving

\Interwoven the short file name of

\Interw~2

When I do a simulate I get that Infamous error in the log file on the
target server

So I do a dir /x on the target server

\>dir /x

Well check this out...if you have been following with what I have been
saying

So I decide to create a folder on the target server called "D:\Interwoven
type 2"

I then do a

\>dir /x
Volume in drive D is Applications
Volume Serial Number is 601F-B0D1

(I also created the OpenDeployNG\etc folder in there as well)

I then run a simulate, and what happens, I get a "completed" message.

but wait heres the kicker the diff file gets written to the base server in

\INTERW~2\OPENDE~1\etc\.AL_Test44.al_documents.wuwasq02.diff_file

Is that nuts or what

So what did I find out with all this.

Some how, and I do believe it's in the jre\bin\iwdeploy.dll, OD is looking
on the target server to for the od-home directory using the bases od-home
path

Any Suggestions?
