Changing a workflow mid-flow

Is it possible to change/modify the workflow once it has been started? Or do changes only take effect once a new workflow is started

What kinds of changes do you want to make? Many aspects of a workflow can be changed after a job has started, but there are currently no public methods to add or remove tasks, or to change add or remove transitions after a job has started. To make those kinds of structural changes you would need to use a nested workflow.

I need to add a new external task further on in the workflow.
The new task is at least two tasks into the job.

All my attempts so far have not worked.

I don't fully understand your requirements for needing to adding a task to a job.

Perhaps you are talking about a process where there is an external task at the end of the process that is known when the job is started, but where you can't determine if that task should or should not be run until midway into the process. That can easily be handled by having a predecessor task that with multiple transitions. It could branch to either an end task or to your conditional, external task.
